7 mm Rem. Mag., but I live several thousand km away from the Indian border.
If you don't hunt the cartridge performances are useless. Moreover, it needs a long barrel, unsuitable for home defence.

.223 Rem is a great goldilocks cartridge right in the middle of pact of all rifle cartridges. Can basically do the job of all caliber in the hand of right shooter..

Best all round for what?

Have a read of this posted by Timmy a few days ago.

Especially the part about US soldiers who were shot with .223 and were relatively unscathed!

I possess a .30-06, a CZ with full stock "Mannlicher" style as they say in the US or "Stutzen" as the German speakers say.
Besides that I have a triad of 7 mm:
-a 7 mm Rem. Mag., my "mountain gun" used mainly for chamois and roe deer, but in Namibia to plains game as well
-a 7x64 mm,idling in the cabinet
-a 7x72R combined with a 16 gauge barrel, with hammers; the combination is fitted with a vintage Kahles 4 x 24 scope. Weapon and scope date back to the '30s. This nice piece of ordnance lays in a vitrine in my sitting room. Obviously, it is locked to the wall!

What a nice collection of rifles! All of these sound very enjoyable!
