Paraguayan presidential guard dies after being impaled by deer

Closed circuit cameras captured the attack by the deer which was a donation to the presidential residence

A Paraguayan military officer has died after being attacked by a deer that ran an antler through his chest while he was serving in a security detail at the presidential residence in the capital, Asunción.

Infantry assistant sergeant Víctor Isasi Flecha, 42, died on Monday night as a result of “piercing injuries” caused by the animal, said a statement from the military forces of the South American country.

The deer was an axis deer from India, which had been donated to the presidential residence, the director of wildlife at the ministry of the environment, Frederick Bauer, told media.

An infantry spokesman, Víctor Urdapilleta, said that closed circuit cameras captured the moment when the soldier approached the deer and he was attacked.

“For unknown reasons he approached the area where the animals live and that’s where he was attacked. There has never been any such attack before,’” Urdapilleta told the newspaper ABC Color.

Flecha appeared to have made a movement which startled the animal, Urdapilleta said.

He was declared dead in a military hospital. Urdapilleta said there was no history of a similar attack by animals routinely kept in the presidential residence, which have included ostriches and ponies in previous administrations. The animals are kept in a restricted area and are not in routine contact with visitors to the residence, which is located in a residential area of the capital city.

Very unfortunate. But this isn’t the first or the last deer-man conflict. It actually isn’t uncommon at all for people to get attacked by deer. You don’t hear about deer attacks too often, but it definitely does occur when people are out in nature. Deer are going to be more aggressive during certain periods of time. Rutting bucks will attack people and can become agitated very easily.

Under normal circumstances, bucks know to be afraid of people, and they will do their best to keep their distance to protect themselves. A rutting buck will choose to attack people instead, and it’s almost as if the animal has become crazy. Rutting bucks have even been known to destroy saplings while they’re in this state. They do a lot of crazy things, and you’re definitely not going to want to get near a rutting buck.

There are even stories of rutting bucks chasing people down and going after them. Stories have been told where deer have swum across lakes and approached humans violently.

It might seem really weird that deer would be so aggressive, but it’s all because the deer are rutting. For those who aren’t familiar with the “rutting” term, this refers to a period of time when bucks are looking for mates. All bucks care about when they’re rutting is looking for does that they can mate with. Many types of animals will act differently during mating season, and that means that this makes more sense than you might have originally thought.

Rutting bucks have very strange behavior, and they aren’t nearly as careful as they should be. Hunters welcome rutting bucks because they’re so much easier to track and kill.

Of course, deer won’t only attack humans when they’re rutting. There are other circumstances when deer might choose to attack humans that you should be aware of. If you’re threatening a deer in some way, then you might find that the deer will attack you as a way to protect itself. Humans who have cornered deer have noted that deer will sometimes attack because it seems like the best potential way out of the situation.

Also, you’ll find that deer will attack humans to try to protect their young. Even a doe might attack a human if it is in an attempt to protect its fawn.

There are many situations that might cause a deer to become violent toward humans, but you can avoid many of them. Knowing to keep a respectful distance away from wild animals such as deer will often be enough to keep you safe so long as you aren’t dealing with a rutting deer.

Well if he wouldn't have gone near the deer , he wouldn't have died.

Revolver,

You made several valid and interesting points. An acquaintance of our member Grumpy in the UK applied for, and granted, a variation on his FAC for a .375 H&H calibre. Reason? He got tired of being stalked by Red stags in rut.

My friends and I were once stalked by a rather large Axis Deer stag in a park. It would not be scared or shooed away. We had to get onto the branches of a tree and stay there until it found a new target and left us alone. ROTFL
