Gagan sets world record in shooting trials

HYDERABAD, September 18: Gagan Narang got a shot in the arm at the selection trials for the Asian Shooting Championships at the Karni Singh Range in New Delhi, where he logged a perfect 600/600 in the 10M air rifle event on Tuesday.

This is the first instance of a perfect score in a competition - the Olympic record stands at 599 and the only other instance of a 600/600 score was logged by a Thai, but out of competition.

"It's a comeback of sorts for me because I have been neglecting my favourite 10M air rifle and concentrating on prone and 3 position events. And critics have never let go the opportunity, but I'm pleased with my performance in other events because I won a medal at the Asian Games. It (the record score) couldn't have happened at a better time," said an ecstatic Gagan.

Does it matter that the perfect score happened during a selection competition? "No, not at all because the selection trials are more important than championships and getting into the team is tougher than shooting at actual competition," he added.

Great going Gagan, I hope and pray he gets all the golds he is competing in.

Now, I'm hoping for a perfect score in a clay sport from someone.

Why is it that Indian shooters can do this at the trials and then things start falling apart for them during the actual competition?
