Multitool....

Its advice time again.. . I am looking to buy good multitool since long, Which one to go for as there are so many to choose from..

Don't want anything ultra expensive.. a mid range with a sheath will do..

I use a Victorinox Swiss Tool Plus http://www.victorinoxindia.com/product_swisstool.htm

This is a solidly built multi-tool. Now that they own Wenger, I wish they would change to the Wenger scissor mechanism. I would have also liked the inclusion of the magnifying glass.

Best multi-tool would be the one that has tool/s that you may need that the other hasn't. So browse the net and see what meets your requirements best.

I have found Gerber makes a great tool. I don't know where you can get them in India though.

Rusty uses Victorinox and uses them very well,from his posts.He got a skill to use them.I handled the Victorinox,Leatherman and Gerber.I found that while Victorinox offers more choices,I feel cramped for space while using them.Where as Gerber and Leatherman feel like proper working man's er tools.Stop it Grumps.

Made very sturdy,lots of space and very functional.

Sorry guys, I did not check the link Rusty posted.I confused it for the Swiss army knife to about which I was speaking.I wasn't speaking of the multi tool and I have no experience of it.

Saw that thing in your bag when Anand was rooting through trying to find the `seedies` ( ) I didn`t realise that it was a multitool though.
I find my original type Leatherman to be very useful......but I don`t actually like it very much. As I keep saying ( `stuck record` `blah, blah` ) the handle is very uncomfortable when having to apply a good amount of pressure.

Unfortunately I have 2 of the old model Gerbers and am pretty happy with them so I don't think I'll be getting a newer model anytime soon. I prefer meatier jaws as they are stronger than needlenose styles, and they do better for delicate work that the pointy ones do for harder work, and then you have a bunged up pair of pliers.

I also bought a leatherman micra that was on sale, I probably wouldn't have bought it otherwise but I have to say it is a handy little tool too. It has a pair of scissors instead of pliers, and I sprung mine a little most likely on some plastic wrapped toy but it can actually be usefull. Also in this post 9/11 time it is easier to carry than most anything else.

Very true Mark.......although I can`t see a Swiss Army Knive being considered as an offensive weapon either.
Having £80 invested in an original Leatherman I`m not inclined to dump it either although I would like something more user friendly ( and user confortable. )

I hadn`t realised that Wenger had been taken over by Victorinox Dodger.......let alone that it was 2 1/2 years ago !

What`s your take on the quality of Wenger Swiss Army Knives compared to Victorinox as a lot of people seem to reckon that they are not as good. I`m quite drawn to the Victorinox Workchamp because it has the locking blade and screwdriver however it doesn`t have a small blade and the one it does have is rather large for cleaning out ones fingernails ( ) The main range don`t have a locking blade otherwise the Swiss Champ would be a likely purchase. The Wengers DO have a locking blade and srewdriver so their Champ would appear the better buy - except for the possible problem with quality.

Have you heard that the Wenger Giant is still selling very well ? Or that they are still being assembled by one chap who is finding it difficult to keep up with the demand ? Or that quite a few variations have been noted in the order in which the `blades/tools` are assembled......and that some of them have one or two `blades` missing ?

Almost £500 for a more than 1kg lump that has no practical application yet is a best-seller. The world`s gone mad...............except that I`d quite like one as well !!!

I wouldn't agree with that at all though it is possible that quality may have fallen in recent years. I owned one in the 80's and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it.

I have also owned a Victorinox Workchamp and liked it. However, it has fewer tools than the Swisschamp and so I have reverted back to the latter. I used to know an airgunner in England who used to do all his rabbit gutting with a Victorinox SAF. He must have really tested the knifes INOX capability.

These giant sized multi-tools really do not interest. I recall seeing my first one in a shop window back in 1981 and simply couldn't understand how someone with an average sized hand was supposed to use it comfortably. Victorinox also do a 'giant' though theirs is not quite that broad. However, even that is a bit too much for me.

I had wondered about the quality issue as both companies have to supply the Swiss army and the quality would have to be comparable to maintain the contracts.
The Swiss Champ really does seem to offer everything required ( and more ) BUT the Champ has the locking large blade and screwdriver...........................
Both are more convenient - and handy - than a multi-tool.
