Indoor/Backyard Plinkers -What do You use as Targets/Backstop/Pellet-Trap?

Post by SoulSniper » Thu Nov 05, 2020 8:23 pm

Hi IFGians and Veterans!
It’s been over a month I’ve been shooting at short ranges (30-45m), and was using a Cardboard box 18"X18”X10” filled with old notepads.
Layers of papers seemed to be good at killing pellets speed and none escaped from the other end.
However there are two cons with this setup which got me put this post here:
1) G-Smith or other 10.6+Gr pellets mostly are reaching the last layers of the notepads in box; May escape into the open barren field behind, and a flyer can be even dangerous...(not using back-stop).
2) 8+Gr pellets are cutting the papers inside into Tiny bits like that you get from Paper-Punch machine, or those from shredder, spreading around even after I’ve shaken them out before bringing back the box in my home {This one's not a big deal until my Wifey discovers where from that mess is coming in  }.

So wanted to know from You all, specially from Members plinking indoors, and those who may not have proper back-stop/pellet catcher arrangements.
What as Targets do You use?
Or maybe, a Target + Pellet catcher + backstop (e.g. Concrete Wall), or similar combination?

The Air-rifle is NX200 Athena, .177, NP Power plant.

Good topic actually..

I always use metal pellet trap which is conical n square you get off any online store n ebay too ..

Normally I use paper targets , different type of stickers , etc as I shoot max up to 15 yards indoors .

Drawback of box n papers is after some shorts as we normally are hitting a inch of the part on the box the paper or notepads inside tend to form a ragged hole and pellets do go through after some time and you need to keep an eye on that and keep changing the notepads or shuffle them . And yes the shredded paper is a big mess if indoor as they just fly around 😂..been through that so now only metal traps.. and if outdoors u use a old study table to cover the flyer behind the pellet trap 😉

I hope we are not that bad a shooter to miss 12x24 inch table :))

In my native I want to try spinners at trees And I have made them myself but you need to be very sure there is nobody coming behind atleast for 100 meters and more in case you have a Magnum like D350 or D460 or Gamo ones

Good if ppl can share pics too ..

Cheers ,
Pravin

If you can find a large enough tire inner tube that you can cut (not the easest thing to do!), and then fold it over a wooden dowel or other support that you rest on the edges of the box, placing this behind the papers, you may find the inner tube rubber sufficient to stop the pellet.

hey Timmy, forgive me if i didn't get it correctly...
by behind the papers You mean, inside the box? it should be able to Not Allow the pellets go further through, yep (y) .
The box is cardboard, and the faces are crushing every 30-40 rounds  .
how about making a 2sqft plank 1.5" thick, (Deodar/other softwood) covering (sticking by rubber-glue) it with the tube layer?
Think, the pellets will rebound?
(maybe, You meant That by "rest on the edges of the box" acting as a back-stop, Thankees! 8) )
Ideas coming in 8)

Yes, inside the box.

From some traps I've seen, the rubber sheet hangs down freely from the board above, yes, behind the paper. Inner tube rubber is fairly tough stuff (which you will find if you try to cut it!) and the pellet, running into it, evidently hits the rubber and falls to the bottom of the box. You might want to experiment around with something like this, as perhaps you can recover the pellets and mess around with them again.

If you can dig up an inner tube someplace, you should be able to do something without it costing much, if anything.

Got you, Timmy!
thanks again...
Pravin, and Timmy, on a lucky note today, i got a 30"x50" 1.5 inch thick Pressboard plank (Wood-dust composite).
Tried shooting at it and it just allowed the pellet to pierce and not cross it... of-course, after passing through the cardboard box and the paper bunch...
So our Back-Stop problem is solved.
The Pellet-Trap with rubber curtains  ... is on my mind now...
grateful to Your responses along...

Thankeee!

Hi there.
Came across this pic long back for a model Backyard range for plinking, thought could share it for you. I use something similar, especially wooden fruit boxes, re-inforced with Old plyboards and tyretubes. Quite effective for my Airpistols and 177s.
Would never try for 22s or anything bigger though coz of their sheer power. To further add to backstops, I picked up old CGI sheets from scrapyard, work great and easy to move whenever I shift.

Oh Alameinite!
This looks like a holy grail for a backyard plinker, and You've got, if, even a *25% of this, for .177s it's too good.
When i posted this thread, had something in my mind but not of this size.
Have got it finished today and shortly shall be posting a thread...
Thanks again for this one though, it's flicked the bug in me at the right time

Cheers!
