Cleaning a rifle

Post by gwattal » Tue Jun 25, 2019 7:13 am

Hi Guys,

This is Govind here.

Ive finally got my fathers .22 rifle transferred in my name.

How does one go about cleaning and oiling the gun?

Where does one get reliable cleaning equipment and any links to cleaning videos ?

Is it worth buying imported CCI etc ammo between 70/- to 200/- per round as compared to the IOF ammo ?

thanks

govind

You need Bore cleaning Rod and Pull Through.
A Tooth-Brush is also a good tool.
First extract the Bolt,
Put Gun Oil with a Dropper through the Bore.
Run the Cleaning Rod, preferably through the Bolt end.
Make sure you are using a nylon bristle.
Any other hard material will ruin the Bore.
In the end run the Pull Through with soft cloth attached in the loop.
Repeat the above steps, if required.
Use the Dropper to Oil the Magazine, Bolt, Trigger etc.
Eject the Magazine & Bolt several times,
This will ensure smooth functioning.
Oil all the external parts with a soft cloth.
Avoid the Oil dripping on the Stock and Scope.
If there is any rust/pitting spots use WD-40 prior to using Oil.
You can leave WD-40 on the Gun and use a hard nylon bristle,
Repeat this every couple of days.
Do not use Sand-Paper, it may damage the Gun.
One has to be extremely careful with Sand-Paper.
If the Gun will not be in use for some time,
Soak a cloth in Gun Oil and
Stuff it about 1-2 inch into the mouth of the Barrel.
This will prevent dust deposition.
Separate Gun Cleaning Cloth is available in Gun Shops.
Get a thick (300Gauge) Plastic and preserve the Gun.
Seal at one end and fold the other.
The Plastic is also available in some Gun Shops.
IOF. 22 LR Cartridges are good.
If you want variety and Hollow Points,
Various options are available - for a price.

Regards,
Jr.

IOF .22 ammo is for Rs. 25 each, cci stinger (which is the most expensive imported. 22lr ammo) is for Rs. 55 each and price of all other imported ammo is inbetween Rs. 25 to 55.

Clean your rifle after each time you use it and once in 3-4 months if not using.

Hoppes 9 (made in USA) cleaning kit (including barrel cleaner and oil) available with me. Contact https://www.indiansforguns.com/viewtopi ... 25&t=22589

Hi,

A common mistake is to overclean a .22 rifle. You need to clean the barrel only after 250 or so rounds. I normally, clean the bore with a cloth patch on a cleaning rod. Use a little oil and then keep changing the cloth patches till they come out clean. Get yourself some ballistol. It is available online.
