There was a case some years ago about an attack by three AK47 weilding terrorists in South Africa. Some little old man with a 5 shot 38 fought back and sent the pack of "brave freedom fighters" running like mice when a cat enters the room

Proves the point, that even if there were a few armed civilians, they would have made a difference. If there were a few armed security guards, they would have made a difference.
