Recent Bear Attack

on Last wednesday there was a bear attack in Chakulia ( Jharkhand) this place is about 80 KM from my Residence. An Asian black bear attacked a cattle Grazer and wounded him severely. the attacking bear was killed by the near by villagers present there to grass their cattle. its a typical example of Man animal conflict where the result is sad for both sides.

Lucky his face and especially eyes are face. I fail to understand why a bear goes for the face and tears it off usually. I know they are not programmed to kill swiftly though. Most attack victims ive seen in pictures and other footage seem to indicate this.

Actually in this eastern Indian areas few things happen simultaneously ( this is what I have observed and the experts may differ in their opinion). Intense heat in April to June mid. Some fruits and Flowers are available in jungles at this time which have a boozing effect and is a common ration for bear. Bear is one of the animal who love to live in their own. they are very fond of Mahua Flowers and fruits and villagers do go for collecting the same from jungle to make liqueur. if both the parties faced each other then either fight or flight. Bear always choose the first because of its instincts.

I send prayers to the gentleman for a full and speedy recovery.....
bears and mountain lions are common on Vancouver island.....they can be encountered even in the 3 major small cities here......the lions are more dangerous to dogs that people take for walks in the many local parks which most are close to the bush.

Horrific incident. The man was lucky to be alive and without loss of eyes and limbs. The bear was no so lucky. Wish the man a speedy recovery.

Not so lucky yet. he is still at risk of loosing his Arm. That's what locals papers saying. I also wish him a speedy recovery. He is a really poor chap. a herdsman, make living by cattle grazing.

one more Human Animal conflict today in news. Its in prabhat khabar and Jagran, details are as follows.. In Chakradharpur area an elderly person is killed by a herd of Elephants. that elderly person was in his field early morning to facilitate irrigation while a herd was at rest in a near by water body. unknowingly the poor chap trigger the alarm and the charging group transform him in a lump of meat and bone.
the unfortunate soul may RIP.

What did you expect? Our population keeps increasing exponentially. And the brunt of the pain is borne by the least fortunate - the poorest of us, like this poor grazer, and the poor animals, like the poor sloth bear.

These incidents will become more and more common, as our exploding population keeps encroaching more and more into the last remaining wilderness.

Re. sloth bears, they are almost blind and deaf, but have an amazing sense of smell, maybe 10X or 100X of a dog. They love termites. Many a time, they have their nose buried in a termite mound, licking up the delicacies much like an anteater, so their only decent sense (of smell) is also hindered. In that position, if they are surprised, their tendency is to lash out with their arms/paws, and then run away. Their paws are armed with 5"-6" claws. Which is what makes such fearsome wounds, ripping open flesh and muscle to tatters. Plus, they are basically scared, have no intention to kill, which might explain why bears attacks rarely result in immediate deaths. (source: mainly Kenneth Anderson, plus some other authors I cannot recall right now). As an aside, Anderson kept a sloth bear as a pet.

Somewhat off-topic, my dad-in-law gifted my son a bear claw, which he had taken off a dead bear cub (no, he didn't kill the cub). It is about 3 inches long, and after 50-odd years, still is pointed enough to pierce skin easily.

JAMSHEDPUR/JHARSUGUDA: Four elephants were killed after being run over by a train between Bamra and Bagdihi railway stations in Jharsuguda of Odisha, close to West Singhbum district of Jharkhand, in the early hours of Monday.
According to Sanjay Ghosh, the chief public relations officer of the South Eastern Railway, the Howrah-Mumbai Mail 12810 hit the jumbos at 3.30am and the driver of the train reported the matter to the Jharsuguda station master at 3.45am.
The jumbos killed included a tusker, one female and two calves (one male and one female). They were hit by the train at Teladiah level-crossing under Chakradharpur railway division limits while scouring for food.
"We have constituted an inquiry committee under the ARM Bondamunda to investigate the matter," Chakradharpur senior divisional commercial manager Bhaskar said.
Soon after the incident, rescue and relief teams from Bandamunda and Chakradharpur rushed to the incident site. During their operation, train traffic on the down line was suspended. Traffic was partially operational on the up line till the affected down line was restored at 7.40 am. Forest officials said the incident site is an elephant corridor.
