putting the ill informed news article aside, is it possible that an air rifle is actually capable of being deadly especially at point blank range given that it has enough fps irrelevant of caliber?

The most intriguing fact in the article is that the report does not cover any clarity/ description of the instrument being used for the incident niether provide any confirmation if the instrument played active role in the demise. However the reporter felt it was important to post the piece of information even without getting facts included in the article.
