Finally Kalashnikov rifles will be made in India. a high level team headed by the Director General (Acquisitions) in the defence ministry and two representatives from the Ordnance Factory Board will be in Russia later this month to visit and assess the Kalashnikov facility.

Even the poorest countries in world have used the freely available Kalashnikov (AK-47) technical know-how and set-up factory to produce and even export. Finally Indian politicians wake up to reality.
Due to politicians and bureaucracy, India is unable to even produce a decent smooth bore 12 gauge shotty. Shame.

Re: Make in India Kalashnikov rifles
Politicians and bureaucratic red tape would ensure that technology transfer would be limited to big defence contractor's (the TATA's, Reliance & the like). If wider access were to be provided it would be a booster of sorts for both the indigenous manufacture and desi R&D. Cheap production costs can start a new wave both in the country and outside.
Wouldn't it be better if India shifted to 5.56mm NATO cartridges? It is more readily available, costs lesser and lighter. AK-101/102 would be the 5.56mm answer.
Lastly, it would be glorious if Indian defence industry could compete with international manufacturers and export [and fill domestic requirments]
