From the Bluebook of gun values, your Model 1895 seems to have been made around 1923. That makes it possible that it was chambered in .30-06. JMO. I could be wrong.

Not only possible, but likely. In any case, since the .30-06 is the .30-03 with a slightly shorter neck, it would be of no consequence. A rechambered .30-40, on the other hand, would likely give extraction problems with the rimless case. Cheers.

The Winchester 1895 is not a strong action, and the .30-'06 was right at the limit of what the action could take. Early on, the first 5000 rifles showed a weakness problem (this is well before the .30-03 and .30-'06 chamberings) and the action had to be modified and strengthened by adding more material to the receiver sides and to the area where the locking lug slots were cut into the receiver walls at the rear. Check out these pictures:

Early M1895:

Later M1895:

(you will also note that the early action did not have the two piece locking finger loop for locking the lever in the closed position.)

Remember that the .30-40 Krag round operates at a pressure that is about 15% to 20% less than that of .30-'06. On the other hand, many M1895s were made for the Muscovite State during WW1, and 7.62x54r operates at similar pressures as .30-'06.

You should review the wiki, as it has some interesting and useful information on the M1895: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchester_Model_1895

I quite agree with you Two Rivers. I wonder how many Model 1895 Winchesters were made for the .30-06 cartridge. Manton's must have imported a tidy lot to have their name prominently and beautifully engraved on the left hand side of the receiver.

Hi Jai,

It must be quite a rifle to elicit the first post from you after more than three years of membership. You really must visit the site more often and keep writing.

Regards.

My Dear Miroflex
Your search for the elusive YETI of the rifle has become interminable. How about giving IOF 30-06 a try.I was wondering if there is any licence holder on this forum who has two IOF 30-06 rifles on his licence.Given opportunity how many would like to possess two IOF 30-06 rifles simultaneously.
Regards

My dear HKS,

The search is over but the correspondence with the licensing authorities goes on. Hopefully the completion of the process is very close to being completed. I have developed a partiality for double rifles which is not met by the current IOF production. I came to know of a double barrel .30-06 but it has been sold.

Dear HKS.

Thanks for your advice.

I know of no one who has two IOF .30-06 on his licence.
