Re: Where to Buy 12-Bore Shotgun?
Thanks Vikram for your reply....I will need your valuable advice on shotguns.....
I bought two kinds of cartridges....one is the Shaktiman Express BB Cartridge 70 mm and the other 65mm by OF NO. 6....which ones to use or avoid?? Also which cartridges to buy later on so that the shotgun is not damaged.
I will take some more pictues in daylight and post soon as I can't understand the 2.5 or 2.75 inch chamber thing. What is full choke?? The barell are little rusted from inside.
Thanks in advance
Asif

Roughly speaking, a chamber is where you insert the cartridge. It comes in different lengths, from 2" to 3.5". You can use a shorter cartridge(e.g.,2.5") in a gun with a longer chamber( e.g., 3"). Your gun could be chambered for 2.5" or 65mm cartridges. If that is the case, you should not use the 2 3/4" or 70mm cartridges in it. That is the reason why we need to see the proofmarks on your barrel flats. The photo#4. We need a clear photo showing all the markings clearly.ASIF007 wrote:Thanks Vikram for your reply....I will need your valuable advice on shotguns.....

A choke is a constriction at the muzzle end of a shotgun barrel. Choke, depending upon the amount of constriction, determines the spread of the shot at a particular distance. Ball or slugs are not advisable to shoot through a full choke. You can find the choke markings on your gun. We need to see them too.
Try to post the photos of your barrel internals. Let's see how they look. Also, try to have the gun checked by a competent gunsmith before you shoot. If the rusting or pitting is too bad, then it could be dangerous to shoot the gun. Not trying to scare you but being cautious.

You need to calm down. It is not like as you imagine. All you need to do is to find out the right ammo to use in your gun. You get both 65mm and 70mm cartridges in India. You simply use what suits your gun. Before doing that, just have the gun checked by a competent gunsmith. That's all. TC is not a gunsmith. He knows a good deal about Calcutta gun dealers. May be there are other members here who can advise you on that. So, do not worry.ASIF007 wrote:Vikram Sir now I am worried to use this shotgun

Re: Where to Buy 12-Bore Shotgun?
Asif,
Going by the proofmarks and the serial number, I am thinking that this gun was made before 1924. As such, chamber length and choke are not mentioned on the gun. I would say you better stick to 65mm(2.5") cartridges and no slugs until the choke measurements are determined. See if you can find a competent gunsmith who can measure them for you. The bores do look clean.

Re: Where to Buy 12-Bore Shotgun?
One barrel is clearly marked choke, but no further info on choke constriction is visible. Vikram is right, you'll have to get someone to measure it for you. I'm willing to bet that the other barrel is cylinder (no choke) as there is no marking on it.
The proof marks mention that the gun has been proof tested for 1 1/8 ounce shot loads. That and the fact that 2 1/2" (65mm) was pretty much the standard chamber length for most English guns, leads me suspect that this would most likely have 65mm chambers.
Added in 2 minutes 41 seconds:
Don't forget choke constriction is relative to bore size and that there are variations in bore size between various shotgun makers. So asides from the muzzle, you'll have to measure the bore diameter ( not the chamber) to arrive at an accurate understanding of what choke it has.

Re: Where to Buy 12-Bore Shotgun?
Thank You for the information. I wish I knew all this nitty gritty before buying the shotgun. I also regret buying 10 rounds of Shaktiman 70 mm which I should not use.
Since I purchased it from J Biswas should I get the measurement done from them or any other competent gunsmith . Looking forward to advice from fellow Kolkattans.
Thanks
Asif
