Looking to buy a new 0.177 Air rifle

Post by vidhya007 » Thu Sep 01, 2016 9:41 pm

I'm planning to buy a new 0.177 air rifle for plinking and ocassional pest control (rats, crows etc). I have never been to any rifle clubs. But, I may visit one or two for target practice once i acquire the AR.

I have ruled out 0.22 caliber as they have outlawed it :-(

I have zeroed in Precihole SX-100 0.177 Pegasus. Later, I came across this forum and went through Basu sir's review of SDB sport rifle. I found that SDB sport rifle is also available in KOVIBAZAAR at 0.177 caliber. SDB sport seems to be a good choice..Now I'm in a dilema to decide....

Both being springers, should I go for SDB sport because SDB sport is cheaper?
Does SDB Sport has same muzzle velocity as Precihole SX-100?

Please advise!

Springer guns perform uneven in terms of accuracy because of its unusual recoil.

They are also heavy and I doubt you'll always feel the urge to go get your rifle out once you see a crow or rat, only to miss them by a few cms.

I have a huge yard with ducks, chicken, pet parrots, birds etc. My trees are filled with countless crows and they drive us mad through the day. They scare away ringnecks and purge fantail nests. We also have a rat problem which dig up the yards. We have a cat problem that raids our chicken house. Last month, we had two cat attacks who took two of our baby budgierigars from inside our house.

We have 3 slingshots with marbles always ready in the varanda which we use regularly over these pests. The rifle is hardly used. Crows can sense it. Rats hardly come out at day and cats are the worst of them all. At best, you can aim at the legs because a body shot does nothing to them.

From experience, I recommend you go for a good quality slingshot. Pest control is not hunting. You need something with quick reponse.

Dear Vidya007,
It is nice to note that you have taken the call on your own.
NX is better than SX.
I have Sport in .22.
I hope in .177 , it should reach 750+ fps , however I have no authentic data to support this.It may be more or may be less.

Lol....etc does not apply. These are the only two creatures you can dispatch if considered pests.

I beg to defer. One can very easily dispatch even mice at 20 meters if one understands the "rhythm" of his gun.

BTW, I love sling shots too and own a very high quality one. I prefer 9 mm ball bearings to marble though.

IMO, the pest definition in india MUST include feral cats. They're so terrifyingly destructive to the fauna that it boggles my mind how they've been allowed to attach with human society.

Thanks for the replies.. :-) .. As soon as I placed the order, I saw a message from VSRaja. After chatting with him on whatsapp, I decided to cancel the NX100 order and go for SDB Artemis.

Already saw some reviews on Youtube relating to Artemis and also spoke to a person in great eastern firearm company.

Seems like Artemis is a good choice and I'm going for it. Please let me know if you think otherwise...

Agree. But Law makers don't see it that way. I know some places where wild boars have destroyed massive amounts of crops and pigeons literally ravaged millet farms. But then, legally they are not pests :banghead: ....... in the mean time, hunger and food shortag continues.......

Yeah, I spoke to a person from great eastern firearm company and he confirmed that it is available in 0.177.

He told me that he need my id proof, which I'll send once I get his emai id...waiting to discuss further with him regarding transaction details.

As soon as I ordered NX 100 (which I cancelled later), I ordered bunch of pellets from Kovaibazaar...

1. Master Shot Premier Pointed 0.177(4.5mm) 500/Tin (Rs 235)
2. G Smith & Co High Split 0.177(4.5mm) 200/Tin (Rs 210)
3. Gamo G-HAMMER(0.177Cal/4.5m) (Rs 600)
4. Gamo TS-10 (0.177Cal/4.5m) (Rs 524)

Now I have to buy the gun.. :D

Hope I complete transaction sooner and get the artemis shipped asap...

Try to avoid heavy pellets. You may want to read the article in the link

Today, I viewed an intersting video 0.177 Vs 0.22. Reviewer concludes the video with comments that he would stick with 0.177 for low powered rifles and 0.22 for high powered rifles. By low powered he means anything below 14 or 12 FPE (I assume from his comments in video). In India, I don't think we get any legal air rifle above 14FPE. So, if 0.22 cal cannot really benefit from an air rifle below 14FPE, why is it so popular In India?

The first time you look at the size of a .22 pellet. you'll get depressed. It's already small and a .177 is smaller than that.

From my experience, I can say that the advantage with .22 is that it can negotiate with wind much better than .177.
Both have knockdown power.
