Post by dittu » Wed Jan 27, 2016 8:47 am

Hello IFGians..
I have IHP model 35 B around 18 years old...(my father bought it).
recently developed interest in plinking and target shooting.
while digging and reading posts here ...

This is my first attempt of amateur target shooting....
pics attached..
Distance: 10m..
standing positing with iron sights..
10 shots on each target..

i have tried some indian made pellets... and grouping are as follows.

1. Magnum flat head.. wt: 12.6 gms approx.. (quite heavy for my rifle)

2. Magnum point head..wt: 7.2 gms approx (Very poor grouping)

3. marksman shot flat..wt: 6.6 gms approx...(well suited for my rifle)

some advice and guidance needed by experienced members..

i think 12.5 gms pellet are quite heavy for my rifle(plz correct me if i am wrong)or my rifle needs tuning...

Hello Dittu.. Looks like you have taken your 1st steps towards ruining your life in a good way. :)

Now, I don't have much experience with your IHP model, but looking at your grouping I think it's a non-rifled barrel. That would be the primary reason for the spread. As you mentioned correctly that heavier pellets are giving bad groups, since a non-rifled barrel is not stabilising the pellets in flight enough to provide consistent groups & they are flying all over the place.

I might be wrong, but that looks to me as the primary reason. :)

I am afraid you are wrong.

A smooth bored airgun will make the pellets keyhole, i.e. hit sideways.

The holes seen in the pics are circular, thereby indicating a rifled bore.

true... gun is rifled bore...

but the quality of pellets( pointed one) is the culprit... i think..

flat heads give completely different pattern...

Dear Mack the Knife ,

What is the appropriate distance to ascertain the pellet is really revolving on fight path and making perfect hole ??

Dittu,
you mentioned that the gun is 18 years old.
Could you shed some light on how it was stored, how many years was the gun lying idle, did you overhaul the gun recently??

hello Bigdaddy...
my gun is .22 bore IHP national model 35B...

It is arond 17-18 years old.... and it was kept idle for around 7-8 years...(as far as i remember)... i almost forgot it until i found it in a cupboard last diwali...(during cleaning etc)...

it seemed bit rough... but little gun oil ( which i use to clean my 12 bore) did the work... it didn't had any sights.. i took it to a gun smith for placing both sights and service... i asked him to check whether seals or washers need to be changed... but to my surprise he did a dry fire and said washer is ok and i will do the needful... i also got a scope rail mounted on it ... as u can see in the picture....

altough he took a good amount for both service and sights... but sad to say sights are very inferior quality... i replaced the front sight. with the old one i found at home and the gun still shoots low and to a little left after adjusting rear sight to its fullest...

tips welcomed from the experienced members...
