revolver .380 ruger
brothers,
1. I have a simple query with respect to the age old topic of NPB and PB. I have been issued with with Ruger .380 Revolver as NSP wpn. I just want to know that if it is a PB or NPB as the list of PB/NPB as given at MHA website and by some members is quite confusing. The nomenclature in issue documents is-PISTOL REV .380 RUGER
2. Request if anyone can throw some light on it.

What is the caliber marking on the revolver? Ruger may well have made a run of revolvers in .38 S&W, a.k.a. .380, for Indian police. But, that caliber would make it PB. Normally a Ruger revolver would be chambered for .38 Special or .357 Magnum. The .38 S&W cartridge is obsolete in the US.

A batch of revolvers in caliber .380 or 38/200 was ordered and received for the police forces in around 80s. I still see mumbai Police carry Ruger revolvers in this caliber. Unfortunately this qualifies it as a P.B. according to the Arms Act. Also depends on what part of our country you are issued the license from as PB bores are alloted to civilians in sensitive border areas, so I have heard.

I have seen a .380 Ruger revolver issued to an uncle of mine who was in the police. IMO, It is a P.B. calibre.

Re: revolver .380 ruger
NSP (Non Service Pattern) weapons are issued to Military personnel on application while in service. While in service there is no requirement to hold an Arms license to be able to keep/carry/use this weapon. So you will have no problems with your Ruger .380 revolver while in service. However, on retirement of the person holding such a weapon, he/she is to immediately obtain a license to cover such a weapon. In light of our laws, where we have PB and NPB categories, you will have to obtain a PB license which is quite difficult nowadays, even for retired military persons.
The Arms Act clearly mentions ".380" Rimmed Revolver cartridges" under the PB category.

Anand

Thanks Anand....this i m clear. but the point of clarification remains that if it is .38 spl than why it is termed as PB. and another thing is that 2010 rule of MHA with respect to grant of PB license allows people posted in sensitive areas to obtain such license. does that mean a military offr posted in such areas can get it....?

Re: revolver .380 ruger
Does seem strange that Ruger would mark the caliber as .38 Special, but chamber them for .380/200. Or were these Ruger .38 Special revolvers rechambered in India to accept .380/200 shells? Have you tried .380/200 cartridges in the gun?

Re: revolver .380 ruger
thanks everyone.......got a confirmation that this weapon is modified by Ruger from their original 38spl version for Indian security establishment. hence it will chamber 380/200 ammo. so amply clear now................wi

Re: revolver .380 ruger
Sir It is a PB wpn if issued under NSP can be kept with the serving armed forces personnel till retirement. It would be required to be surrendered or transferred to another serving personnel on retirement as it cannot be endorsed on an NPB arms license. Only possibility is to to procure a PB license. In case you want to transfer it or surrender it I request if u could pm me as I am looking for a NSP wpn and am also eligible for it.
