Surprises keep coming...the more I dig into my kazana :D
I found this 'Sheafer' gifted by an uncle a long time ago...has a medium nib that suits my style of writing!

Waah, Ustaad, WAAH! ROTFL

That does not look like an old Sheaffer. However, I could be wrong. Will check.

Here's something I composed a while ago which I humbly dedicate to this 'Topic' & all lovers of writing by hand :D

My writing talents lay dormant
An art that’s soon getting decadent,

Till the redoubtable Mack the Knife
Brought the skills back to life,

The scribe in me now is awakened
Getting set to revive this noble trend,

Out came a variety of fountain pen
Long forgotten in drawers of my den,

Oh what a joy as pen meets paper
Inking words spicier than salt & pepper,

No wonder of all skills perfected by man
Writing with pen & ink is the best one can!!!

Hi Mack,
You got me worried man!
So took out my 10X jeweler’s magnifying glass…..
Both the engravings on the metal rim of the cap & the nib say…SHEAFFER – USA!!! :D

Mack The Knife wrote:You are full of surprises....first you pop in here and now you say that you have been using fountain pens again for the past few years. Let's see them.

Bril (Bangalore company) still makes a violet ink. Chelpark closed down and i am not sure if Camel/Camlin make a violet/purple ink. He may also be using an imported ink or may be mixing inks.

Send him a link to this thread and get him on board.
No problem as such with the Lamy, just that it writes fairly thick. From your posts on this thread I've figured out that it's on account of it sporting a medium nib.

I picked it up in 2009, though I should clarify that I'm only an occasional user of fountain pens.

Sad to hear that Chelpark closed down, it was always my first choice of ink. I still have a half used bottle of their Turquoise Blue sitting on my desk.

I'll ask my friend if he mixes his own, though am fairly certain that it's likely some brand of imported ink that he's been using.

Cheers!

You are welcome.

Like I said that isn't an old Sheaffer. It's a Sheaffer Prelude. Manufacture started in 1997. The majority were made in the U.S. but some were made overseas after production moved out of the U.S.

It's the nib that made me doubt it being an old Sheaffer.

Abhijeet, take your Safari to a William Penn outlet and tell them you want a fine nib or a medium that does not write a thick line.

They may not agree to an exchange but the nibs aren't that expensive. Try before you buy.

Failing which, I will swap you my sole Fine nib (don't quite care for it) for your Medium.

P.S.: You can keep your pot of Chelpark for nostalgias sake but do not use old ink.

Read this for the first time in my 10th grade english paper, 12 years back. Dont remember what question was asked about this poem nor do i remember what i replied. The words however stuck in my mind. Read it again today somewhere.

These are just the last few lines as the whole wouldn't come in one page. Maybe i'll write the whole on an A4 when i am able to better my "chicken scratchings" :D

Very nice, Kshitij.

Reminds me of another 'If', that is more in keeping with this forum.

Will write it down after the fog of sleep dissipates a bit.

Kipling's 'Arithmetic on the Frontier' is another good candidate for your calligraphy pen. Use A4 though.

MTK, the Parker Vector has been inked and it is such a pleasure to start writing with a fountain pen again! Having said that, I shall spare the lot of you with any samples of my absolutely atrocious handwriting lest it scares some of you from using fountain pens for good after seeing it

However, if I may, I would like to share a note written by an old shikari whose famous father I guess most of you would have heard of! This is a letter from DON ANDERSON (who else  ) written to one of his fans who had the honour of getting to hear stories from Don regarding some of the places his (Don's) father wrote about. Don, incidentally is the son of the famous shikari and wildlife author KENNETH ANDERSON. I am sharing this as it was written using a fountain pen and written by a man who grew up in an era devoid of electronic gadgets. This note was of course written when Don was quite old as you can see at the end of it but (at least to me) the handwriting is still very very good.

Now that brought a smile to my ugly mug. Keep at it and most of all enjoy yourself.

I am looking forward to my order from Luxor as well. Unfortunately, I removed the Vector from the basket whilst checking out.

Thank you very much for posting Don's note to Suresh. He was the last of the old Bangalore Boys to pass away.

Mack,
Just checked out William Penn's prices on their website, steep! While they have an outlet very close to home, I think I'll just wait for the next time I make a trip to Nai Sadak - for those not familiar with Delhi, that's north India's biggest book, printing, paper & stationary wholesale market. It is also where I'd picked up my Lamy, for a fraction of the list price at William Penn. Will probably also have a wider selection of nibs/ pens/ inks to choose from at Nai Sadak.

I'm sure some of the price difference is due to the pommelling the ₹ has taken over the past 5 years, but I don't think that can account for all of it.

Cheers!

I don't see any nibs on their website.

Yes, their prices are high despite them being the Indian distributors for Lamy.

Couldn't see any nibs there either, just guessed from their pricing for the Safari that they wouldn't be selling things cheap. They're sitting on some of the most expensive real estate in Saket (must be the same for other locations), so it is understandable that their margins need to factor in those kind of overheads as well.

Besides the anticipation of better prices, at trip to Nai Sadak also holds the possibility of digging up some interesting items, which is incentive enough for a visit. Found myself a roll of good quality duct tape on my last visit, let see what pops up on this visit :)

Cheers!

The prices they have on their website is pretty much what the Lamys go for today. There are multiple online retailers and also many other shops and stationery stores that sell them at about the same prices. As for the nibs, they cost about half of what a Lamy safari cost with the nib.
Eg. The safari with a broad nib+converter+free cartridge costs 1800 bucks while the nib alone costs 900! So it makes sense to pick up the pen rather than just the nib.

*if you are able to source either the pens or the nibs at prices substantially lower than the above, please share, i'd like to benefit too :P

Tell me which nibs you need and I can get them the next time I order from Cult Pens. They go for GBP 3.75 each.

I get a minimum 10% discount at WP. If and when you become a regular, make sure you ask for it. And don't forget to sign up for the reward points either. That said, it's almost always cheaper to import, especially when there are big sales or from auction sites.
