NCC cadet injured in firing dies in Bangalore hospital

A National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadet from Kerala, who had suffered bullet injury during a firing practice at NCC camp, died early on Thursday, sources said.
The victim, 18-year-old M. Anas died at a hospital in Bangalore. A first-year degree student from Kannur, Anas had sustained serious injuries during a firing practice held in a private college campus in Kannur in the second week of September. The bullet fired by another cadet accidentally hit his right chest.
The NCC had earlier dubbed the injury as minor, but the youth’s limbs were paralysed. Later, he was shifted to a hospital in Bangalore for expert treatment. The state government had assured all assistance for the treatment of the youth.
According to sources, Anas was clearing the remains of the previous day’s practice, when the officer in charge reportedly gave firing orders. He had not noticed Anas repairing the target.
Local police had registered a case and NCC had also begun a probe into the incident.

The news of the death of National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadet M. Anas, 18, who suffered bullet injury during a firing practice at the NCC camp at Nirmalagiri College at Koothuparamba on September 18, was received with shock by the officers and cadets of the 31 NCC Battalion Kerala, which is already at the receiving end of criticism for the serious lapse at the firing range.

Anas, first year B.Com student at the NAS College Kallikkandy, was injured when a bullet fired by another cadet hit his right chest during a firing drill.

He was admitted to a private hospital in Kozhikode before being shifted to the Command Hospital, Bangalore.

Though his limbs had been paralysed, his death occurred when the NCC officers and his family were waiting for an order from the authorities to take him to the military hospital in Pune for physiotherapy.

Unexpected death

“His death is unexpected. Doctors treating him were optimistic about his recovery,” an Assistant NCC Officer (ANO) of the battalion told The Hindu . The body of Anas, son of M. Kunahahammad, will be brought to his house at Kurikkilad, near Vadakara, for funeral. He is one of the four children of his parents.

NCC sources said that a military inquiry was already on into the incident. The Koothuparamba police too were investigating.

Anas was hit when the parade instructor issued firing order to a batch of cadets even as Anas was instructed to repair the target damaged in firing by the previous batch.

“It is a collective responsibility as ANOs and the camp adjutant were present when the accident occurred,” an officer said adding that cadets who had fired on hearing the order could not be blamed for the accident. The instructor, who retired from service two days after the incident, and other officers in charge of the camp are under investigation.

Cardiac arrest

Special Correspondent writes from Bangalore: Authorities at the Command Hospital told The Hindu on Thursday that Anas had died after he suffered a cardiac arrest and that the cause of death was not related to the injury he had sustained.

They said Anas developed convulsions and suffered a cardiac arrest when he was waiting in the out-patient department (OPD) of the hospital on Wednesday.

“He had been called for a follow-up as his bladder functioning had been affected following the spinal injury caused by the gun shot. He was revived after he collapsed in the OPD and was shifted to the ICU. However, he suffered a second cardiac arrest and succumbed,” the authorities said, adding, he died of an unrelated disease that cannot be attributed to the gun-shot firing.

The negligent officer should be penalised.a bullet from a 303 rifle can cause severe blood loss and shock.i doubt the cadet had any other disease to have killed him.

AFAIK, they were using .22 rifles.

During our times NCC used the 303 rifle with the barrel replaced or sleeved to fire .22 rounds and one in college one session with SLR's but with the magazine removed (if I remember correctly) and in single shot firing mode.
But 303's were definitely not used.
