Weekend Plinking: Range Estimation using Mil Dots
Hi Guys,
Did some inspired air gun shooting this weekend. Our regular shooting, plinking outing involves shooting cans etc from 50 to 100 yards. This weekend we dediced to try something different.
The inspiration came from the following videos:
So with those videos by ted as our to-do this weekend, we set out.
Our regular weekend range was taken up for development hence we had to shift base to another location. Luckily we were able to come up with a place that ticked most boxes for us.
This is our new home for the weekends... First we decided to do some regular shooting out at 100 yards. The following is what we managed:
100yards. 12shot group. Mild winds from left to right. 100yards. 5 shot group. .177 pellet for hole size reference.
Then we went about setting up the targets at 30, 50, 60 and 100 yards.
3.6inch targets made for range estimation/hold over practice
Setting up the targets at various ranges:
This pic is taken from a few feet before the 50yard target. The two targets set at 60yards are behind them and ankesh can be seen setting up the targets at 100yards.
This is from the 30yard target. 50, 60 yard targets are in the background. Ankesh is the blue&white spec at 100yards.

Re: Range Estimation and using Mil Dots
Continued....
The view from the shooting chair:
Targets are the black dots at 30, 50 and 60. Ankesh is at 100yards (reference for how small a big sized man looks at 100yards. Also to give an idea how small a 3.6inch target looks at the same distance) Here we the final results after about 10 shots on each target At the end of our exercise, we wereable to accurately estimate our hold over/under from 30 to 100 yards.
Also the open area and considerable winds gave us enough pratice to hone our windage skills too
Hopefully we able to strecth out to 150-200 yards next time.

ALWAYS reminds me of this:
We never have somebody run downrange without asking them to hold out their cigarettes

Hi Kshitij,
Wow! That coverage is both inspiring & challenging
Just goes to show how "Die Hard" week-end plinkers will spare no effort to re-locate to fulfill their passion
The whole exercise is one of dedication + the inputs that are both innovative & functional in every respect

whats with the bruce willis references guys
@commonwealth_of_pa, that is one of my favourite scenes from the jackal. It still has me thinking of the kind of algorithms a system like that would need if it were to be made. What do you say to guys who go down range and hold out their cigarettes? Smoking kills
@brihaji,
This was just the recce trip. Will soon have the back stops and other stuff sorted out too. Weekends are gonna be long range 101

SMJ,
The owner of the place is known to me. Would never dare to go to any random place and start shooting. Even here, we did a thorough check of approaches around the place to make sure any one approaching our line of fire will be seen from a long way off. Also made sure there would be no chance of ricochets hitting any one or anything. Before we go next will also get proper metal back stops made to make sure there is zero chance of any accidents.

Kshitij, I am sure you would take utmost care I was thinking its ironic that last week a few of us from Mumbai were lamenting open spaces for plinking and today I see your post
Judging by the pictures I thought it was a fantastically lucky discovery!
Anyways glad you have a place you can go to now

Kshitij,
What a wonderful location you have discovered. I am sure with suitable precautions you can shoot regular rifles also. How I wish I was living in Mumbai.
Regards
Atul
