Where do I buy tasers in India? Preferably online or in Mumbai. Tried Google-guru, came up with distributors who will sell only to retailers / resellers.

I need 4-5 of them (on person, in car, at home).
Cheers!

Emascot products looks good .
I like two of them .
But how well or bad they perform , that needs to be seen .

Saw few taser flashlights on ebay. Looked pretty cool. Check them out.

Best self defense non aggressive looking item is a good heavy 4 battery flashlight. Keep one everywhere you want and practice few techniques with one.

If I am not wrong, tasers/stun guns are banned items for civilian possession. Please do check the laws before you try to buy any.

I do believe that the best Urban self defence weapon is a perfect foldable knife.
Keep knives in your pocket and pray that you will never need it

The batons can also be the best on firearm urban self defence weapons apart from the knives which are really dangerous for outdoors carry

It's kind of funny. I can carry a machinegun for self defense in the Great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (although that might not be smart). But a lot of the things discussed in this thread would be illegal for me to carry in my state. We can carry firearms, simple knives (not daggers), some stun guns, and chemical spray. But no clubs, brass knuckles, batons, nun-chucks, or just about any impact weapon or complex bladed weapon. I think these are very old laws that nobody ever got around to getting off the books, but the penalties are real. Most states in America are not like this, though.

What a lovely place to live in...
Bur why is it not a smart idea to carry a machine gun around. Is it due to some legal issues that may crop up or what. Would like to know seriously.

A machinegun would probably not look good to a jury in a self defense case, especially if a prosecutor thought he had a way to make it look like a murder. If you are wandering around with a loaded machinegun I think many people would assume you are looking for trouble. Some of these weapons would also be more likely to endanger uninvolved members of the public if you don't properly control the fire in certain situations. We know from warfare that sometimes people get scared and mash down that trigger and swing the thing around. Finally, no new machineguns can be produced for civilians (except gun dealers and manufacturers) in the US. I believe there are 270,000 to go around between civilians. MAC-10s can cost $4,000 USD and M16s can cost $10,000 to $25,000 depending on how you do it. Nobody would want to risk having one confiscated due to some misunderstanding with the legal system.

But you could if you were so inclined :)

I believe that in the USA a lot of people carry handguns for self defense. Here in India it is normally not required by a common man at least in the Metros,
Do you feel that the law and order situation in the USA is not so good, that the common man needs to be armed??

Of course not. Not until the moment he does need to be :)

Most of our crime happens in about 1% or less of the area of our country. That's not because we have large, rural expanses, it's because most crime happens within bad areas. Most people in the US have less of a chance of being a victim of violent crime than Canadians or most Europeans. But when bad things happen, they happen fast and without warning. If I knew I needed to be armed I would either stay home that day or carry a rifle. Since I don't know I carry a handgun all the time. Or two :)

Think of it this way. If there would ever be a reason you might need a firearm in your home to defend yourself, logic would dictate you must have 10 times the need when you are outside your home. Because you have less control of any situation, must interact with people even if you think it is a bad idea, and if an attack comes it will be at the time and place chosen by the criminal where you will have no escape and no chance of aid. If I see 10 thugs pull up to my house I have a lot more options than if a few decide to get me on the street somewhere. The street is THEIR house.
