Re: Measuring the velocity of airgun

In my experience it is less easy to decide where to start measuring the sound of rifle rather than the target sound. The target produces no sound as long as there is nothing hitting it. The moment the target produces any sound - you can take that point as the pellet hitting the target. The real problem is the rifle sound which is a complex mix of sounds that start before the pellet moves and continue for a long tome after the pellet leaves the barrel.

I have found that the rifle sound starts off at low volume and quickly reaches a peak and aftter the peak there is a slightly slower reduction in sound volume. I start measuring from the end of the peak - just before the volume starts coming down. My justification for this is that there are two peak sounds from the rifle very close together. One is the air explosively escaping the muzle just as the pellet leaves and another sound of the piston hitting the end of the barrel. After these events the sound volume cannot increase at all because all the energy has been expended. So I measure from the point that the energy has been expended and volume starts going down. For both these points you need to expand the sound signature to a considerable degree - so that the start and stop sounds are at least 3-4 cm apart on your screen.

Incidentally the title of your thread is "measuring the velocity of airgun". The velocity of my airgun is normally zero. :D

Suyash
chrony connect gives average velocity of the pellet.i.e it calculates the time took by the pellet to travel some fixed distance(like 10yrds) and gives the average speed of the pellet.when gun is fired it generates high sound and when the target is hit,it also generates high sound.so chrony connect analyzes this sound waves.
avg velocity=distance traveled/time.

In Chronoconnect if you feed exact BC , you are likely to get muzzle velocity only.

What problem are you facing exactly in attaching the pics?
