Another project (Pics)

After seeing all the wonderful restoration work here, I am encouraged to start another project, unfortunately I don't have the skills of many of the folks on this forum so it will be going to my gunsmith. I took it out of the safe and started by scraping some finish off the stock and saw some nice wood, thought this 100 year old lady deserves someone more talented than me to restore her.

The plan is to refinish the stock and re-blue the barrels, then I will decide if anything has to be done to restore the action.

Not a well known name today, E.M. Reilly was in business during the Victorian age and made guns for explorers and hunters during the Victorian and Edwardian era.

Sir Samuel Baker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Baker) the famous explorer/hunter who is credited to having found one of the sources of Nile had 8/10 bore Reilly guns in his battery. His experiences with the Hamran hunters who hunted elephants with swords is some of the best readings in my life.

Selous the famous African hunter also took Reilly guns to Africa on his trips among others.

Wow - looks great herb - fine chances that it will turn out to be what one could call - a NIB, genuine, antique shotgun!

Can't wait to see how the gunsmith finishes the furniture and then treats the metal (especially bringing out the qualities of the beautiful engraving).

Love these old guns, they have a character that the newer guns (mass produced) don't have. The newer guns are very well made and nothing comes close to them for heavy use, yet they seem soulless. Just my opinion.

Now that's what I call restoration !
A most wonderful post Herb and a great great job to take up. Cant wait to see the final results.
Some Reilly guns were imported to India by R B Rodda and Manton & Co. I have seen Reilly S/S in their old catalogues. But we don't see them anymore.
