Rifle question for XL and others...

I think the Stevens 200 is more akin to the the old Savage 110, with the recoil lug behind the barrel nut, where the Axis has the recoil lug in the stock, and it fits in a slot in the barrel or receiver. Evidently the system works, since everyone seems to be starting to use the Axis-type recoil lug system.

Value for money = savage axis. Dirt cheap. Can afford to mess around with it. Accurate. Bad trigger. I really wanted to buy one and have fired one.

Or get any old action and put on a new barrel , more like a new project.

I wont go into calibres etc as one can discuss them to kingdom come so just touching on the topic.

However will swear by 7-08. Ive shot it, hunted with it. Accurate, low recoil, does the job.

For a first rifle, i suggest get an 'american' calibre. so go for a 260 rem than a 6.5 swede. esp when u like shorter actions.
End of the day, shot placement beats calibre. if you fear .308 recoil, dont even go near a 270.

So Tim, what did you decide on for the little guy?

I was too excited -- the subject has vanished from the occasional conversations. My Son decided to get him involved in upland type bird hunting = I suspect because he already has a Mossberg pump. I know they went shooting clays a few times. However, the subject of hunting and guns seems to have been dropped. My Son does a lot of traveling for his work, and is a bit hard to catch, but I will keep you posted on this.

Once again, I got very excited, only to see things vaporize, apparently...

The last I heard from them, my Son had given Little Ben his .22 (a Remington 513 that I bought my Son when he was about 11).

I'm going to see what's happening with all of this. Maybe it is time to "strike" and turn the kid into a milsurp enthusiast!

I believe Tim's son lives in Colorado.
Tim doesn't live in New Mexico at present but he's lived all over the states. He claims New Mexico as his spiritual home.

In fact, it’s a safe bet that in the past century, no other round has put more antlers on the wall and venison in the freezer than the .30-30.

Yes, Little Ben and his dad Big Ben do live in Colorado, and yes, I'm most definitely a New Mexican to the core! (I don't know how many New Mexican Rajinikanth fans there are, tho! )

A lever gun is great, and Little Ben has already been shooting Big Ben's Marlin 336, so that ground is covered pretty good.

I still have try to inculcate an appreciation for old milsurp in Little Ben... hopefully, I will get the chance!

Very lucky kid and a very loving grandfather, Ben must be on top of the clouds on becoming the owner of a fine rifle in a legendary caliber like the .308.

Keep us updated as how the young man his enjoying his new gift (hunting, target etc.).
