A warm welcome to the sharp section of IFG and great to have another blade lover among us. The image that you've posted is not that of a Katar. A Katar is a punch dagger of pure indian origin Unlike indo persian blades like pesh kabz, churra, khajar etc.

Your image is a probably a letter opener modeled after US Cavalry Sabre probably a 1860 model.

Moin, although you have posted a few wonderful threads on blades, maybe it is time to put up some "identifiers" for blades? Maybe link to a site where info on blade shapes can be seen? I, for one, wouldn't recognise a "pesh kabz" from a "Sabre, Cavalry Issue, Officers Light" even if both danced the hornpipe right now!

Brother there is no such thing as nihang katar ...this is a short cavalry sword look alike ..and i seen these designs ..they good for show pieces hanging on the wall.

Now I know that the things in the museums which looks like knuckle dusters on steroids are Katars! Isn't the name a bit misleading? Because the action is not kaatna but bhokna, as in chaaku bhok diya. Nothing to do with dogs, who bhauk!

Hello Debjeet,

This image you have uploaded doesn't seem to be a katar. A katar is a weapon which is a push dagger characterised by its H-shaped horizontal hand grip which results in the blade sitting above the user's knuckles. Unique to South Asia, it is the most famous and characteristic of Indian daggers.

Some Ceremonial Katar are also used in worship.
