Good going Herb, it looks like both you and your hunting partner have that look of satisfaction coming from a good hunt!

I have used boats in the past, yesterday I was near a small pond about 100x50mts and just stayed put on land. Shoes and apparel depends on the how you are going to hunt, If planning to deploy decoys into the water then waders would be the way to go otherwise waterproof boots would suffice. If you don't have a dog to retrieve from water and the water is deep then a boat is a must in cold weather, temp is routinely below zero where I hunt. Waterproof apparel would be the way to go as even if you don't plan to go into the water the tall grass (where I hunt) is always wet in the early morning and it is no fun sitting in wet clothes in the cold. Do not forget bug spray as there will be plenty of bugs around the water.
Vikram, the dog is a 5 years old and belongs to my hunting buddy. My lab Rocky is a little over a year old and is shaping up to be a very fine upland dog.Vikram wrote:Well done, Herb! Nice photos. The Lab is yours? Looks like a fine fellow.

Always prepared waterfowl in typical Indian style with all masala's and spices, helps to mask that ducky flavor that all waterfowl have.
Some pics of Rocky last year and now...

Hi Herb,
Awesome ! Are these Canadian Geese ? Canadian Geese got declared vermin in NZ and hence season is all year round ! The farmers particularly dislike the geese as they feed voraciously on the grass meant for sheep and then poo all over and apparently their poo is not very good for the grass ! On the recipe front there's an old NZ favourite recipe that I can share related to geese particularly due to its strong game flavour and also stubborn meat..here goes
Heat the oven to 180 for 1 hour
Oil the tray generously
add spices to flavour
Insert a red clay brick into the tray
Add the goose, seat it on top of the brick
Cook for 4 hours on low heat
Remove the whole tray
Throw away the Goose and eat the bloody brick !!
Regards,
Oggie

Hi Oggie, Yes they are Canada Geese. Although we have an extended season they have not been declared a vermin, we do have problem with their numbers. Too many of them in areas where they cannot be hunted (public parks and residential neighborhood). Out in the country they are very wary and cannot be approached easily.Calling them in using decoys makes for a exciting hunt. We also have open season for snow geese.

Re: Waterfowl Hunt (Pics)
Hi Herb,
They display identical traits here. Very cunning and extremely skittish. We quite often shoot them out of hides on paddocks as farmers love getting them off their sheep feed. Being declared vermin and as a scheduled pest they are open game all year long. Yes agree - this quarry is very exciting shooting indeed ! I've shot a few but never eaten any. Do let me know how it turns out with Indian masalas etc.

Herb,
What a good looking boy your Rocky is.
I'm sure he will make a fine gun dog.
Oggie,
Got a chuckle out of your Canada Goose recipe.
It is quite true that if they are not properly cooked, eating the brick might be more enjoyable.
