Some serious old memories!

I had the HMT - Jawan gifted to me by my father mid-70's, I think he purchased it from the CSD (Army Store) Rs 100/- I was quite tickled when he told me that I was almost a Jawan (adult) now...and here is a watch for you.

I still remember how I used to love the black dial and the way the radium numerals used to light up in the dark - very cool for a teenager who never owned a watch before.

Nylon strap, huge dial; I cracked up the glass quite a few times in the rough and tumble days! After the first glass replacement, it was never really 'water resistant' and the radium effect wore off gradually!

I stupidly sold off my Black pilot to a friend recently. I hope I find another one. There was report of mad rush at Bangalore and Delhi showrooms. I think HMT is going to take a deep last breadth before dying down just because of this news.

Here is my limited edition white pilot.

I still remember my Dad buying me the HMT Janata Super Deluxe when I was in class 8 (1985). This was from a large HMT dealership in Connaught Place, Delhi. I still remember the price - Rs. 242. A princely sum in those days! We were allowed to wear watches at school only for exams, starting class 8, hence the gift. In those days, we perforce learnt the discipline of winding the watch every morning.

Lasted me until 1998, when I gave it for repair to an unscrupulous chap, who proceeded to replace the HMT gears and jewels with some fake stuff and effectively put paid to the workings of the watch!

That was the last wind-up watch I had - unless some kind soul gifts me a Rolex......

Many people are unaware that HMT was part of the ISRO, a fallout of the accurate timers developed for the space programme. HMT & Antrix Corporation had the same "holding company" so to speak!
