The AUG has been in Pakistani SF usage for some years...while our SF has been blundering around (till the recent decision on the Tavor) with 'sophisticated and lethal' AKs! I'd still regard the Tavor with some mild discomfort because it's not a very battle proven rifle. No doubt its seen limited use by the IDF...but little else. Besides, very technically speaking, it's pretty cluttered in construction in comparison to the AUG... a potential source of problems for a military rifle.... with such close involvement with Austrian arms manufacturers, Glock, Steyr too(SSG69)... I was wondering how difficult it would have been to grab the AUG.

As usual... with the Tavor, I smell dirty money.

I dont have link but similar issues as yours have been raised by Israeli Defense Forces regarding Travor. Check IOFB website they are already touting this gun on their website. They can hardly produce simpler design guns what say

AUG should have been selected long time ago. Australia, Malay(?) and Saudi army have selected this gun.

I would toss this one too into the ring as probable candidate HK G36

Hi Ngrewal... Ya the zittara has been up on the ofb list for some time... As I'd asked earlier in this thread...whats the arrangement with Israeli hardware? Are we license manufacturing it or are we simply resellers? If one has studied the AUG in intimate detail- it is simplicity fine tuned to an art. The Tavor /Zittara series though by no means washouts are still some way off from reaching the AUG level....just my humble opinion.

Fully agree, the G36 is another first class piece I think its proven enough.

Some users prefer G 36 over AUG and all one can do is hope. WIsh they can pick this one up and dump INSAS.

I wont be surprised if Travor gun is just being assembled from imported parts. IDF will not trust these Gurus at OFB to play with their Gun's reputation and then who knows what the real deal is.

GUys, AUG was selected by the Kuwaiti and Aussies too.The Kuwaitis turned and ran before the ubiquitous AK of the Iraqis, denying the AUG a battle test, the Aussies threw it away as waste of good tax payers money-seems it was too delicate for their liking!
Any inputs on the Aussie rejection?

Since the INSAS , a mutated clone of the FNC, took 12 years to fructify, I too wonder why all the features werent pirated?
The Nepalese army rejected theINSAS in favour of the M-16 during the last/recent insurgency-saw a whole bunch of M-16's ( including a couple poked in my face on a ride from teh Airport to Kathmandu)during their late great hate!

Back to the 30 06 where it all started.
Called up the OFB Rifle Factory on Fri & spoke to an indl from marketing,here's the speel on the 3006.

5 or 6 pieces were produced for trials and after the 1st round given the feed back,changes / modifications were suggested by the NRAI and the Association of Arms and Ammo dealers,
didnt know one existed.

Another round of trials is slated to happen this year or early next year and then the OFB will take a call on whether it should be made available on the streets.
The price as of Mar 07 was expected to be around INR 75 K inclusive of taxes.

According to the OFB officer the pic is very hazy,there are no timelines,it depends on the next round of trials & the feed back from the Orgs mentioned above.
A positive I see, as and when it rolls out there might be a drop in prices of the currently available imported rifles in the market.

While the Israeli's have some solid looking development, their own units, esp the SF I'm told, prefer the US M-16/AK series...Food for thought.
tavor etc are for impressing our desi babus period.
US may be looking at a 7mm/276 cal for its service rifle-Rumour
Iraq and Afghanistan have been major testing grounds for a whole load of weaponry, and so far, nothing to beat Comrade Kalashnikov and Eugene Stoner , Spasibo!
