Re: What do you think of this initiative
Good idea but one can't depend on help reaching in time. In the absence of a firearm, pepper spray would be a good option.
Interestingly, no one seems to notice what this sort of mobile app says about how much trust citizens place in their local police!

Re: What do you think of this initiative
Friends, I have a few very simple issues with alert softwares / apps / etc. (assuming the threatened person is a woman - I initially thought this out for the [V]ith U app promoted by Channel[V] and kareena Kapoor.....)
1. Do you get time to press the on button 5 times (or whatever)? The video shows the guys trailing the girl from morning to night. Suppose they decide to strike immediately?
2. If I get a message from a lady I know, I am not Superman / Spiderman (just a mango man!!). I can't fly or swing across the city. In Mumbai, it takes me between 30 min to 1 hr to travel 12 km from home to office (in the dry season). And my friends call me a crazy driver.
3. Assume I reach on time, what the heck am I supposed to do, unarmed mango man that I am in this country? My name ain't Chan, Jackie Chan!
In my humble opinion, these apps are just a psychological placebo. I just hope that this placebo doesn't make people indulge in more risky behaviour (e.g. I have this XYZ app, it's safe for me to go to "bad areas" at 2:00 in the night).
And just by the way, the lady in the video should get rid of those earphones, and keep the water bottle and cellphone in a bag / pocket. And a pepper spray handy. Even a kubotan or Comtech Stinger(TM) is preferable.
And of course, I would prefer any lady of my acquaintance to "pack heat" instead of screaming for help! Can we get the women's empowerment wallahs on it? Replace "ek saal aur" by "Get every woman a gun"..........????

Great post essdee1972!
Also, I'll repeat and rephrase what I said above -
if people don't believe dialling 100 (the police no. in India) is of any use at all, as is obvious from the proliferation of apps like the one in this post, what is the morality of denying citizens the right to keep and bear arms?!
Cheers!

Essdess This is bangalore. Even if you just call the cops from just about anywhere they would reach you in two to three minutes. There are cameras at every corner of the city and vans patrolling round the clock.
Not just that last night there was a power cut at 1 am. I called them at their call center they came in 20 minutes.

You need to know your rights Kanwar. There was a abundant car at the end of the road where I live, neighbors just kept grumbling about it, Useless police don't know how to handle these issues only collecting fines. I walked upto the police station met the PI, he sent two constables along with the tiger and got the car towed in two hours. We as citizens keep complaining about bad roads and infrastructure. Just how much do we know about the facilities offered. Instead of complaining about things do any of us actually have the courage to walk into police station, talk to the Inspector and have the matter sorted out.
I dont say Bangalore is anywhere close to a city like Singapore or Dubai, but its still one of the best places to live in India. If you have the courage to initiate, things can be done here.
The next time you or for that matter any one reading this has an issue with in your neighborhood instead of cursing the system why not gather up the courage meet the concerned authorities and have it sorted out.
One more example. I got a notice few weeks back to surrender my gun for elections. I did just that. A day later I submitted an application for exemption, got it approved and got my gun back in three days time.
Living in Bangalore have you ever heard of something like Sakala

Re: What do you think of this initiative
I thing I know a thing or two about Bangalore Farook, I considered myself a Bangalorean, BTW I never pointed about getting a car removed (from where that came BTW).
and since when Bangalore cops started wearing their undies over their pants. You can't go and get bread n eggs in 2-3 minutes and you are talking about cops coming in that time.
Thanks I think I know about Sakala.
And just for my Information which all cities have you lived in INDIA till date?

Re: What do you think of this initiative
Just about every city except Bihar and punjab. The point I am trying to make here before you start complaining about a place know your rights, meet the authorities. If you ever need to meet the Police Commissioner he wont make you wait outside for than 5 min and you would have your work done right there..

Re: What do you think of this initiative
Then you are very learned man Farook,
But I asked you which Bangalore are you talking about not because how much time I need to wait in front of police commissioner office but police reaching every where in 2-3 minutes and that has nothing to do with my inability to know my rights.
Have fun
