Airgun import experiences - via personal baggage route

Dear Sirs,

After spending a lot of time reading forum with opposite advices/explanations,I am as confused as before. Can some one make it simple:
1)Air guns dont need a license in india-Right?
2)If I bring a Co2 powered BB Airgun(a pistol,4.5mm 0.177 caliber with <3j power,costing about US$50) in checked in baggage, would the guys in Mumbai stop me? I don't have any memberships in any gun clubs. Is there any document online which says so?
3) If I bring some CO2 cannisters(12g) in the checked in luggage would there be any issues?
4)If above fails, can i send this with fedEx to my address in india,without needing any membership?
5)If I bring a Japanese katana with me in checked in luggage(replica,sharp <120US$), would that have any issues?

As per my understanding,

1, NO (power limit is there but not seems strict)
2, Don't do with out membership...
3, Yes
4, No, Membership is required.
5, May not be an issue, heard some ware that some thing above 18" is risky.(not sure)

A friend of mine recently brought two full sized genuine katana swords from Japan without any trouble from customs. In fact he got them in un sharpened state so that he would not have any customs issues. He is a business traveler frequently travelling all over the world and always brings back unusual things ( to some ) and know the ways of airport customs in India and know how to cope up with them in BOTH ways.

Anyone, experienced travelling in Qatar airways having transit in Doha? I will be flying from Barcelona to Mumbai and carrying airpistol of .177 caliber Walther CP88
-I will be carrying invoice of gun
-I will carry membership letter and membership card (+extra photocopies)
-Gun will be in hard-case inside my check-in bag
-No CO2 cylinders.
-I am having a box of pellet left with me am I allowed to carry or I can leave them here if it is a problem.
-Print out of custom declaration for .177 duty free for members.


I am bit concerned because I am carrying gun 1st time. Pointers from fellow members are highly appreciated.

By the way, I live in Indore and it will be hard for me to visit Mumbai for police NOC, any way I can walk out with my gun from airport?

Which airport will you be landing at?

Thank you so much for reply. I am landing in Mumbai on 25th May. Qatar airways are fooling me around. One customer care agent says this comes under firearm category and need papers and declaration and other said this is a sport pistol so there is no need for any letter all I need is hard box and unloaded gun in my luggage. My mistake I should have booked Lufthansa instead.

I receive call from qatar air, they say they tried to take approval for me to carry airgun but mumbai custom is demanding for LICENSE. Can anyone please share latest letter from Indian custom or link mentioning this does not need license.
Can anyone also clarify "the purchase/user of these items has a valid “user licence” from the competent local (Indian) authority under the provisions of existing Arms Act, 1959." I read this on mumbai custom probably airline is asking for user license. It is shooting club card, please share your thoughts, I will be flying very soon.

Hi Guys,

I am considering buying a scope for my Precihole, and my brother is willing to bring one over from the US. Is it OK to bring a scope via the personal baggage route? Should he notify the airline authorities, etc beforehand? He does not have a rifle club membership, and neither do I - would this be required for bringing in a scope?

And another question: Is it worth fitting a scope on a Precihole? (I have an NX100 Polaris).

We would like to know about what happened as many of us are in line to import a good gun.

I can now share my experience after bringing few airpistols in baggage. I flew from Paris to BLR with 3 airpistols in baggage with Air france.Air france asks in their website to pack them separately in a hard case for which I bought an aluminium box to put these air pistols with license and their statements from their site(ground crew usually don't know all the rules).I am sure no one even opened the box. In Bangalore the customs people stopped me as expected.I showed them the guns and explained Indian air pistol rules,which they were ignorant of.Fortunately I had the exemption notification,thanks to this forum which they kept for records.So now I have it.
