My 1a1

Post by Poccur2 » Tue Apr 29, 2014 7:26 am

She is almost done...Her name is Rati...

It has taken 10 years to find all the parts...lower from Texas, carry handle from Oregon, magazine from California...
Barrel from Washington state.....etc. etc.
Upper receiver was actually from Australia and I had it machined to look the part...

Sticking point is the hand guards...they are Australian...the hunt for Indian hand guards continues...for some reason they are rare in the USA...

Almost there...

That's a Love FAL you have put together Poccur2.

I would say its good that you did not get handguards of the Ishapore FAL from India. The furniture of the last rifles in production were quite inferior in fit and finish. Since they don't make them anymore, even if you got one it would probably be a refurbished one.

Ah! you had me wondering. Colloquially they are called DSA FAL's (or SA58's as you mentioned) as FN has nothing to do with their manufacture.

I'm a big fan of the FAL in all its incarnations and definitely envious of Poccur2.

BTW, Poccur2, Whose receiver did you use?

Hi TC,

It is probably symbolic of a deep mental issue (ha ha ha) but I need the handguards to be correct. I have found so many authentic bits for Rati that is seems a shame to stop when i am so close.
You said they do not make them any more....I was under the impression the SLR was still being made at the Ishapore factory...

I had looked at the DSA guns and I know they get good reviews but I prefer the hunt.
(In my opinion) Having someone else make it to order is like buying your fish at the supermarket, it never tastes quite as good as when you catch it yourself

Truth is, I wanted a product they do not make...the 1a1 SLR

Hi Poccur2
I get your view and the mental issue :D
The FAL is still in their website but except for a few companies of BSF posted in the western sector virtually nobody uses the 7.62 round or the FAL in the police and the armed forces in India anymore. 5.56 is the standard ammo now, I am sure you know that. The old FALs have been distributed among state police and some paramilitary forces (CISF, RPF) and will be in use till the stock of ammo lasts/ the rifles are no more serviceable - whichever happens first.
Ishapore's main production is the INSAS but it too is going to end soon as the Army is soon going to adopt a foreign rifle as standard.

Cheers

Does the Indian army not use the FN-MAG? They don't use the 7.62 x 51 at all?

Well, I guess I will hunt a deactivated 1a1 in India and see if I can harvest the hand guards:):):)
I will never surrender... :):)
Well, not yet anyway.... ROTFL

Hi Poccur2,
As I said the Army officially adopted the 5.56 as the standard ammo more than a decade ago and the FAL was scrapped. Except for a few Army units and some paramilitary forces e.g BSF units deployed in the western and eastern sector, the 7.62 is not used at all. In fact rifles that were dumped by the Army and subsequently given to the police in many states have also been abandoned for INSAS and AK.
But you could always give it a try and find one :D All I can say is that though scrapped, almost every army jawan and officer I know says the FAL is greatly missed and the new rifles don't match anywhere in the accuracy department.

Cheers
TC

Haaa... the dear old SLR :D . Have shot it till i developed calluses in my hand and a big ugly swelling in my right cheek
easily shoot 10 on 10s at 300m especially in standing and prone positions, each round lovingly polished till they shone... hmmm this is taking me on a nostalgia trip.

But then, why are u looking for a Indian hand guard? even if u are able to procure one they are likely to be well worn and scratched.
Some learn by reading. A few by observation. The rest of 'em have to pee on the electric fence.

Because I found a stock and restored it, found a pistol grip and restored it...just the hand guards remain:)

No wait, it just occurred to me...I will need an Indian sling too...

OK, just the hand guards and the sling...then I am stopping...no really....

The problem of finding a Handguard here is shipping it out of India. I will also look around here. and the sling
