Got My Springfield XD .40!
Friends,
The better half got me a Springfield XD .40 semi a couple of weeks back. The licensing process is quite simple, compared to India. The shop people issue a sale certificate and you take it to the licensing authorities along with a health certificate and your national ID card. They check in the computer database if you have a criminal record. Then they ask you to pay a fee and wait for a period of ten days to come and collect the license. In this case, they were courteous and did not even ask for the reason for buying one. They told us to collect the license in an hour if we could wait.
The pistol is a polymer framed pistol with an all steel slide. Built very well and I only read good things about it. As I am not a fan of plastic pistols,I would rather have bought a CZ 75 variation in .40 S&W. They weren't available and cost a lot more.
The XD(Xtreme Duty) is originally the Croatian service pistol HS2000. Springfield Armory in US markets them under their own name and backs it with their service in US.
You can get a lot more on the design details if you follow this link.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HS2000
The XD comes in a plastic case, two steel magazines, cable lock, cleaning brush, belt holster, speed loader and double magazine pouch. 4" barrel. 12+1 capacity.

It has some interesting features. Apart from the trigger safety, it has a grip safety which ensures that unless the pistol is firmly gripped, you cannot fire it. There is also a drop safety which prevents it from firing if dropped accidentally.
This is the cocking indicator
This is the loaded chamber indicator. It pops up when there is a round in the chamber.
I have not yet taken it to the range and will try to do a range report sometime. One cannot carry handguns on person or in vehicle here. If you wish to take it to the range, you get a permission from the police who will mention the date and hours on the permission letter. Carry permits are issued only to security staff. If there is a complaint this is it.
Hope you like the photos.
Best-
Vikram

Very nice Vikram.
Looks like you got a keeper... and the handgun is pretty decent too
You will like the XD. There's really not much to dislike about it.
If I have one complaint, it is that the grip is a little wide but I say that about all double stack pistols.
When you do get to the range, let us know how she shoots for you.

Lovely pistol Vikram. Springfield makes very nice pistols including some very pretty 1911. Congrats and enjoy?
Does the width of the grip bother you? My Beretta M92 also has a double stacked magazine and the grip is little wider than my 1911's.
Is there a limit on the number of firearms you can own in Georgia?

Wow, that's a nice little toy! Obviously, your Bride is a special person!
Vikram, I think you will have loads of fun shooting that thing. Do you get Brown Bear or Wolf ammo there? If so, you should be able to shoot up a storm. I don't think that a plastic frame is any detriment, and it does make the pistol lighter. Congratulations!
Now, we need to see some range pics!

Congratulations, Vikram! That is one looker you've got. I do prefer polymer framed pistols and this is amongst the best looking ones I've seen. Look forward to the range report.

Re: Got My Springfield XD .40!
Thank you, everyone, for your kind words of appreciation.
Timmy,
I don't think we get the brands of ammo you mentioned. I am actually thinking of casting bullets and reloading as ammo is expensive in Georgia.
I checked an FN-FNX tactical in .45 cal. That is some beast. Designed and built exceptionally well,IMO, but chunky.
I will try to do a range report as soon as I can.

Herb and XL, the grip is indeed boxy. As I do have fair sized paws, the grip does not feel too large for my hands. However, I would not describe it as pleasant. Just does not compare to the feel of a single-stack 1911.herb wrote:Does the width of the grip bother you? There are no limits on the number of firearms one can own and I know a couple of guys who have a fair collection of sorts.Semi rifles are not a problem either. SKS and Dragunovs are common. There are a lot of firearms enthusiasts here.Only handguns are restricted in the sense that they cannot be carried on person or in a vehicle. Range use must be pre-approved.Is there a limit on the number of firearms you can own in Georgia?
I will try to do a range report as soon as I can.

Re: Got My Springfield XD .40!
Vikram, casting is a lot of fun and very satisfying (at least, for me) although it does take a lot of time. Years ago, I got invited out to do a combat handgun exercise. I went through 4 boxes of 45 ACP (200 rounds) in just an hour or so. It was a lot of fun, but I thought about all the work that went into making those 200 rounds!
Just make sure you cast in a ventilated area, because those lead fumes are deadly. It is a lot of fun to scrounge lead!
Shooting a nice weapon like you have is a great feeling, and shooting your own ammo through it is icing on the cake!
