great info xl
just curios to know.what you are plannig to install a long stroke piston or short stoke one.it will be too early but i can ask also to buljit paji whats his plan on long stroke or short stoke.kindly shed some lights on advantage ot disadvantage of both systems thanks
ashokgodara,

Neither. The mil-spec M4 carbine does not use a gas piston.
What I will be building is a lightweight M4 look alike (an M4gery, if you like :)) with a 16" barrel. Baljit will probably be building his a little differently
I will be using the standard "Direct Impingement"(DI) system with a carbine length gas tube.

Generally an AR-15 with 16" barrels will use the "Carbine Length" gas system
AR-15's with 18" barrels will use a "Mid Length" gas system
and AR-15's with 20" barrels will use a "Rifle Length" gas tube.

Here is how Direct Impingement works:

Image
image from HERE
The image recycles about every four or five seconds.

When the cartridge is fired, the gasses pushing the bullet up the bore will vent up through a "gas port" in the bore. This gas is forced down a "gas tube", back towards the receiver.
When this gas impacts (or impinges on) the "gas key" that is affixed to the top of the bolt, it pushes the bolt carrier group back (against spring pressure) to extract and eject the fired cartridge and load a fresh on into the chamber.

Image
image from HERE
The gas key is that silver thing that is attached to the top of the bolt. The receiver end of the gas tube sits inside of it.

I hope this helped your understanding of the system. Please do not hesitate to ask questions if something is not clear.

Yes but you see they have to make their message understood by people who might not be able to speak Minnesotan; even Canadians. :)
From the theoretical point of view, the rundown you gave of direct impingement's qualities are spot on, and I think that ultimately, it is the way to go. I sometimes wish it could be applied to pistols again (and I do lament the passing of the Automag). A part of that issue is the powder used, and direct impingement definitely favors clean burning varieties.

None the less, I am sure you are right: Chuck is indeed indicating that there is one on that trailer with Baljit's name on it!
It will be interesting to see what Baljit comes up with on his build. I might be wrong but I don't think it will resemble mine.
However, he already has a .223 in a bolt action so I'm quite possibly incorrect in thinking he will be trying for a long range shooter.

Hello Guy's, I found a video on Youtube about the AR-15 Reliability Demonstration. You guy's can see in this video how this gun works with the dirt.

I am posting this video for those guys who like to see what we are building and the Reliability about this gun.

Enjoy the Video.

TC,
Here is something for you.
These are some of the accessories available for the AR-15.
Of course, this thing could bankrupt a person but this is just a very small selection of the accessories available for the AR.

The Grenade launcher normally used on the M16 is the 40mm M203 grenade launcher.
This grenade launcher is used by many countries (approximately 50) including India and Pakistan. India's armed forces use the M203 on the Tavor, I believe.

Civilians can own them but.....
In the United States, M203 grenade launcher attachments fitted with the standard rifled 40mm barrel are classified as "Destructive Devices" under the National Firearms Act part 26 U.S.C. 5845, 27 CFR 479.11,[25] because they are a "non-sporting" firearm with a bore greater than one-half inch in diameter. M203s are on the civilian NFA market but are limited as most manufacturers have quit selling to the civilian markets. New M203 Launchers sell for approximately $2,000 plus a $200 transfer tax, and new manufacture 40mm training ammunition is available for $5 to $10 per cartridge, as of March 2011. High explosive 40mm grenades are available for $400 to $500 per cartridge; however, they are exceedingly rare on the civilian market, as each grenade constitutes a Destructive Device on its own, and must be registered with the Federal government, requiring payment of a $200 tax and compliance with storage regulations for high explosives. There are also sub-caliber adapters available for the 40mm M203 (and M79) grenade launchers, which will allow the use of standard 12 gauge shotgun shells[26] and .22 Rimfire ammo.[27]
There are limited numbers in circulation (and expensive), so many people if they are so inclined, purchase the Cobray Grenade launcher.
This is a 37 mm replica and as such cannot use and fire the 40 mm grenades. They are sold as "Flare Launchers".

37 mm Flares available for purchase HERE. Interesting to see all the varieties available.

You can buy a used Cobray launcher for a few hundred bucks.

Other manufacturers also sell 37 mm launchers:

Personally, I'm not interested in attaching one on any rifle that I own.

Many thanks xl_target - as always your comments are on the spot. However, rib-tickling - I cannot feel/say as my ribs are back - again, under a generous coating of insulatuing material! How did this come about - points to ponder on the MN road trip :(

Oh yes Baljit I would love to do that - as you know I am a sponge for knowledge and information!

I have days off from Tue, the 4th of Mar to Sun, the 9th of Mar...I have been pondering a trip to a Sunny place in the USA, not too far away from Vancouver say, LA/Vegas/Mexico - no bookings done yet! But if you have a better idea...fire the AR idea away; Kelowna - here I come! :D

If and when....my brave, plucky, little, Honda Civic Coupe, 2008 can make it through those, huge, high altitude, snowed in, mountain passes/roads/avalanche areas/'snow-chains-ON from here', kind of places - on my regular, all-weather tires! :D I am game! Lemme know! :D

Maybe, I could even share some of my lateral thinking ideas on how to 'soup' up the whole AR effect? Steven Speilberg and George Lucas would love this - how about a right angle drill?? ROTFL

CK, that's great, if you join me when I am building my AR. :)
This way you know very well about AR and you going to learn lot's of things about AR.
Once I received all the parts, I let you know then we going to make a plan.I hope,I'll have those parts in next few weeks.
If you are coming to Kelowna in these days , you need a winter tires because there is lot's of snow on the coquihalla Hwy.Hwy was closed few time in last few days due to avalanche between Hope and Merritt.

Very nice Baljit.
Command Arms makes decent stuff and the Ergo grips are very comfortable.
It looks like your rifle has the makings of a heavy target rifle. That sounds great!
It will give the IFG guys the ability to see two different builds which is great.
Let us know what other parts you have coming? What did you pick for the barrel; what profile and what barrel thickness?
Have you picked a trigger yet?

As I thought, Baljit, you are building a totally different gun than I am. I am trying to build a lightweight short range plinker/HD rifle.
I am going with Magpul MOE grips, a Magpul winter triggerguard, A Magpul STR stock and a Magpul carbine length fore-end. I've also got several Magpul magazines.

Image
So it's pretty much going to be a lightweight 16" barreled carbine with MOE furniture but with an STR stock to utilize the Quick Detach points in the stock.
It will have a lightweight red dot on it for fast target acquisition. Having played with picatinny rail loaded handguards, I must say that I am not a fan. It's nice to have a rail to mount an accessory but they sure are hard on your hands (especially on a shotgun) when you handle them for long periods of time. You can put rail covers on but then the handguard gets thick and bulky. The Magpul handguard allow you to add small sections of rail just where you want it.

That's the fun thing about an AR-15. You can build them any way you want.
