I had the pleasure of chatting with him briefly about 9 years ago, unfortunately it was pretty superficial on my behalf ("you must be impressed your design is still doing so well a half century later, etc. etc....") but he struck me as a pretty sincere guy.

Son of semi-literate peasants. Conscripted into armored regiment. Wounded soldier. Anguishing in hospital about the relative efficiencies of their and the enemy's guns. Designs a weapon which goes on to be one of the largest produced in the world. Sheer genius!

Rest in Peace, Comrade General Mikhail Timofeyevich!
Cheers!

I had the privilege to meet Mikhail Kalishnokov at a defence exhibition at Pragati Maidan a few years back.

I of course was not a part of any delegation, but had simply gone to meet the great man.

He was sitting quietly in the Russian stall, most people did not know who he was, and I spent a delightful hour talking with him.

Though he understood English, we used a pretty Russian translator, and he came across as a simple down to earth man.

He was justifiably proud of his rifles and lamented the poor quality of the multitude of clones being made by different manufacturers of the world, even though that was his greatest legacy.

Yet he agreed that even though his newer designs were superior weapons, none would have the influence in small arms history as his beloved AK 47.

AK 47 . Undoubtedly. The most popular rifle ever made.
RIP Kalashnikov.
