Belt sander attachment to mini bench grinder

Post by pratik_mahale » Fri Nov 08, 2013 1:18 pm

In knife making belt sender is very important tool but also very costly & out of my budget so I decided to make my won belt sender I tried various motors I have but all of them don’t have the high RPM & torque required for belt sender finally I drop the idea & brought a mini Bench Grinder with grinding, Buffing & flexi shaft attachment max RPM of motor is 10,000 & 120 W power.
But after buying this bench grinder I thought of making a belt sander attachment to it
First I removed the buffing wheel & put a rubber washer normally used in car suspension.
I use wooden wheel, few wooden blocks & old printer spare part & made a belt sender attachment
It working fine at list for my personal work it’s OK

Hi Pratik,
> Fantastic improvisation :D
> Having marketed Portable Bench Grinders for a long time - I can assure you that your adaptation is ingenious!!!
> How did you manage to get the right size of the belt sander - is it readily available in the market?
> Wonderful job :D :D :D
> Now we expect more fantastic looking blades from you
Briha
PS: A suggestion - In the wooden wheel if you could cut a 2mm / 3mm deep groove - It will help keep the running belt in position - No slippage.

Thanks for your suggestion sir
I brought 3 meter long 60 grit 20 mm belt & using araldite I make small belt from it
I used C-clamp to fix the bench grinder in the required position after tightening the belt
I also made belt using 400 grit sandpaper very useful in polishing & sharpening the knife

1. Beveling / Chamfering
2. Fine finishing profiles
3. Contouring
4. Concave & Convex grinding edges

Yes Sir that is true and metal is more a stable and strong platform than wood for this application...

Great job!
Congrats on your belt sander. It is must tool for a knifemaking.
Why don't you try making vertical attachment?
How much the bench grinder costs?

By adding two wheels I can make it vertical belt sander but it will add more friction & longer belt will need more power which I think too much for my mini bench grinder motor
I like the current setup it’s very compact & I am comfortable with horizontal grinding surface

It cost me Rs.2000/-

Pratik,

Fantastic DIY. Simple and superb.

Brihaji,

One can buy a grinding bit which can do hollow grinding. I will carry the bit along to show you when we meet next.

As an example of overcoming adversity, Karoly Takacs has few peers. He was part of Hungary’s world champion pistol-shooting team in 1938, when an army grenade exploded, crippling his right hand. Ten years later, having taught himself to shoot with his left, he won two gold medals in the rapid-fire class.
