My Ulu Knife
While searching different types of knifes I come across a ULU knife I like the shape so I decided to make it & brought a round saw blade from Chor Bazar for Rs. 70/-
Using my CLIF mini Die Grinder I cut the blade
& finally my ULU KNIFE

Good job bro...

Re: My Ulu Knife
Nice job! The true ulu has no finger hole, and the blade edge is ground one side only. Also, the blade is thin, like a handsaw blade.

Re: My Ulu Knife
Thanks surajshuresh & discovershashank
TwoRivers thanks for your suggestions
As the blade already had a hole in the center I make it little bit bigger so I can put my middle finger in it to get good grip & the blade is 2mm thick
Planning to make a wooden handle as suggested by discovershashank

Re: My Ulu Knife
Hi Pratik,
Great work.!!
If i am not mistaken, Ulu is the traditional blade of Inuit Indians (Alaska/Nrth Canada/Greenland) and is used to cleave and dress big game like reindeer/seals.
Its essentially thick and bulky to which helps in cleaving large bones and cutting through frozen meat.
A big thumbs-up on smithing!!!
cheers

Pratik,
Very well done, sir.
I posted photos of an Ulu made for the Alaskan Tourist trade here. There is a photo that shows the back side so you can see how the handle is attached. Mack also posted a photo of his Ulu and you can see how his handle is attached.
astronomy.domaine,
As Two Rivers says, most Ulu's that I have seen are thin and would not be used for heavy chopping.

It is a woman's knife. For cutting meat, skinning, filleting fish. It is not used for "cleaving large bones". It has a thin blade, sharpened on one side only, and a handle off-set to the outside.astronomy.domaine wrote:

How long did you live among the Inupiaq people?

As an example of overcoming adversity, Karoly Takacs has few peers. He was part of Hungary’s world champion pistol-shooting team in 1938, when an army grenade exploded, crippling his right hand. Ten years later, having taught himself to shoot with his left, he won two gold medals in the rapid-fire class.

The only Indians I have spent any time with are...well,..in India.
my knowledge on the subject, inaccurate as you observed, was solely based on bits and pieces from the net, texts or telly.
Glad you pointed it out and provided authentic details on the subject for benefit of us all. This is what a discussion forum is all about, isnt it!?
cheers

Hi Pratik,
> Hats off for your excellent workmanship on the Ulu knife
> By seeing the progression of your work from cutting wheel to the final product shows a certain mastery over metal working

Briha
BTW - It reminded me of 'skiving' knife used by tanners
