Re: Daniel Winkler knives and Seal Team 6
Moin,
more on your questions when we meet. however the profound question "what makes a soldier fight?" read the book "War" by Sebastian Junger, he answers this and the concept of fear. beautiful essays on these concepts. there is a cliche ' war does not decide who is right; it only determines who is left' ; i gues we will have to see who or what is left in Afgh.
success of a smaller force against a much larger one depends, to some extent, on the levels of motivation and the will to fight in each of the forces. generally, the force fighting for survival (spartans, LTTE early days, Jews in Israel in the early days but not now, Taliban(?) ) are more motivated. but this is a generalism.

Lanceman,
Very well put there by you....and absolutely on the mark.
Not as informed and learned as you are but I personally have great admiration for SLA's resolve to annihilate the LTTE. They probably went overboard with the coup de grace but guess the LTTE asked for it by their past deeds.
Now more motivated than ever to meet you. Do please find the time for us......
Can't make it tomorrow though.

As an example of overcoming adversity, Karoly Takacs has few peers. He was part of Hungary’s world champion pistol-shooting team in 1938, when an army grenade exploded, crippling his right hand. Ten years later, having taught himself to shoot with his left, he won two gold medals in the rapid-fire class.

It is all the mental state of mind. The Spartans were bred for war.War was vacation, so hard was their training. The Afghans have vowed never to be defeated. They are willing to do anything to accomplish that.
Nothing mattered to them more than glory in battle and victory respectively. They didn't care much about death or family or whatever.
Not to mention, superior tactics.

I have also read the shift from guerrilla warfare to conventional warfare with artillery and what not sounded the death knell for the LTTE.

I did sir, while you have covered the political aspect as well ( which i had forgotten ) i do vaguely remember they even had an airforce of sorts and everything...
Needless to say, the moment they started standing around in one place for too long, the Lankans nailed them.
This is a most excellent direction this thread has taken.I trust you will continue to enlighten us.

Re: Daniel Winkler knives and Seal Team 6
Sri Lanka was very different war.
when we went in we were armed with the 7.62 SLR (20 round mag), 9mm carbine(32 round mag) and the LMG. the LTTE had AK weapons, i counted six variants while I was there. the Chinese version was the lowest of the scale and the Czech version the best (I used to carry a captured Czech one). At that time a Czech AK was the only one I had seen with the muzzle cut at an angle to counter the nasty habit of the AK to rise when firing. later many others copied it.
out matched in burst fire power, our jawans soon improvised. a metal strip on the sear converted an SLR to full auto. it was good for one almighty burst as the violence of an SLR burst was so much that it stripped the rifling from the barrel and often bulged it. It was totally uncontrolled. but since you had one chance who cared.....
later we were issued 7.62 SLR 1C which had three round burst and a short barrel.... still no use. any one who could carried a captured AK.
as for the 9mm carb, very prone to stoppages hence very unpopular, it is a descendant of some venerable weapon of WW2.

Could you explain? Were they so weak?
No side arms?

No weapon can be used beyond its design specifications and an SLR is not designed for burst fire, the barrel is too thin.
A side arm is next to useless in that kind of warfare except for back up.

They did not have the heavy barrel variant?
Side arm for back up only, none were issued?
