Can you please identify this rifle ?

Post by chokxxi90210 » Wed Jul 10, 2013 12:07 am

Hi Folks,

I am new to Air Rifles; guns have always been a topic of curiosity and interest to me but i never had one. Recently one of my friends got this rifle for me; it has an eagle symbol on it and there was a tag which said model 95. It's a break barrel air-rifle.

Can anyone please help me identify this one ? Also what are the possibilities of attaching a scope to this rifle ?

Probably a Calcutta or Jodhpur made AR. Look on the compression tube. The manufacturer's name might be printed on it.

Nice of your friend to gift you one, but don't expect quality in it. Neither are you going to get bull's eyes with this.

Secondly, stick with o[en sight shooting first, perfect your stance, methodology etc. of shooting and then move up to optical sights (scopes).

Just my tu'ppence. ;)

The rear part of the barrel and front part of the wooden stock especially the bevelled edge look exactly like my SDB 50. The rear sights on my SDB 50 are not good and the rear sight on the rifle in the pic does not look great. But my SDB is a very accurate rifle after working on the sights so I would not judge accuracy from an image

Don't forget to try the rifle out with every single brand of pellet you can find. The rife will choose the pellet that it is accurate and true with. It will "settle" with one or two brands of pellet. In my experience I have to print out 10 to 15 target sheets and use up at least 20 to 30 pellets of each type before I can decide which really works. But then I have never fixed the rifle and tested it, I always stand and shoot. That is what I like to do.

If it is written as "Eagle", then there is high possibility of being made by Eagle Sport Calcutta.
If so, then it can not be that bad.
All it requires ,good makeover or tuning.
Pellets play a big role for better accuracy.
Benne if you go for off hand shooting for all three guns that you have ,where you rate your SDB amongst them ?

I can answer this question in 2 ways
1. I get up in the morning, take 3 pellets and shoot at 3 targets (tin can lids about 3-4 inches diameter) from 18 meters - about 60 feet) and I hit all three and knock them down with any of the three rifles selected at random.

2. See for yourself: A 3 shot grouping shot from Orion, IHP 35 and SDB 50 from 18 meters with a 2 Rupee coin placed to indicate size.

Dear Benne,
Pics gave better answers then what you could have otherwise.

Hi Basu,
> Perhaps Benne was testing your own conclusion as to which AR performed better
> As for me all seem to have performed reasonably well - It would've been better if Benne had shot these ARs from a Bench Rest, this would've put the ARs to better testing for their accuracy.
> Lastly apart from accuracy the feel when the AR is shouldered counts :D

When I thought about the 3 shot photos I realized two things

1. The performance was as expected. The Orion is consistent. So is the IHP, but because I was shooting all 3 rifles one after another the change of feel of trigger in the IHP upset my aim a bit. The SDB is slightly temperamental. It is deadly accurate 75 to 80% of the time. This may be due to other factors like dirt in the barrel etc. Honestly I find it easiest to hit a 2 inch target from 18 meters with the IHP - but that is because there is something about the sights that seems to gel with my eyes. I don't know what it is.

2. I used the pellets that each rifle likes. The Orion like Gsmith. The IHP likes Marshalshot flat ( 11 grain/700 mg pellet) and the SDB likes Masterhot wadcutter
