Axx,

I tend to agree with you. As the saying goes, Karamojo Bell shot all 1200 of his elephants with a 7X57 (or .275 Rigby, as I'm sure he would have called it).

That being said, extreme-velocity (as opposed to extreme-caliber) does continually fascinate me. The thought that with correct practice and equipment, a human being can shoot accurately at a thousand yards, somehow makes me happy.

Not a hunter myself, though (though, as some wise person on this forum said, I have no illusions where the mutton in my curry comes from). Talking of envelopes, once shot a box of .44 Magnum in an hour and split my thumb webbing somewhat. In a perverse way, have always wanted to go back and see if I can do it without the blood. Quite sure that "bigger is better" stops at that point for me.

Best,

Shurjo

Sorry mate, the envelope went upto 1800m -with a .50 Barrett , in Iraq.
The box of 44mag-was it on target or a ' numbers only ' exercise?how many in the black? bench rested or off hand?
Yup, size matters , and I'm a strong votary.
5 with a 458 mag at one go has been my top score...

Gentlemen,

The pistol is an Encore from Thompson Center - a beefed up Contender style frame for rifle rounds. The Nitroexpress Forum to which I have linked above has a detailed discussion of the gun in question and I would suggest that anyone interested visits there and checks it out. It is worth reading as the owner, himself a former police officer, has a detailed post about his rationale behind building this monster with a wealth of technical information.

And, BTW, there is some recoil junkie who recently built a handgun for the 50 BMG as well. I only wish he doesn't end up breaking his wrist or injuring himself - that has happened with less powerful rounds before.

Speaking of Bell, there have been a number if discussions on the NE forums and on AR (which is the world's biggest African Hunting forum) about his guns and methods by vastly experienced hunters and researchers and he didn't only use a 6.5x54 Mannlicher and a 7x57 Mauser to hunt elephant. He also used a 318 Westley Richards and a 303 to some extent. He was an expert stalker and a superb shot and the light recoiling rifles suited his technique of working his way into the middle of a herd and using his shooting skills to deliver highly accurate shots at close range. I doubt that anyone could do it now.

In recent years Bell's tally has been vastly exceeded by people like the recently deceased Clem Coetsee, Mike La Grange and others especially in Southern Africa where elephant are in huge numbers compared to any period in history. All of these very experienced hunters use more powerful rifles. Though most of us are inlikely to shoot any elephant in Africa, ever, it could be great fun to go there and read the expert opinions of those who have been there and done it.

Cheers!

el jefe,

Offhand, at a IPSC silhoutte target at 25 yds, out of a Redhawk with a 6' barrel. The first two sets of six were here and there, but towards the end I was keeping them in the head.

.458 Magnum  What were you hunting?
