If the teak stock is given and more tanned polish, it will really shine out, however it is your personal choice. With IOF these days, blonde is IN ( with 30 06)

Vikram - I think bolt is not blued.

Waiting to see the pics with scope mounted. Will be temped to ask you from where did you get the stock done.

Hi Vikram,
Yup, the entire bolt minus the "end piece" has been blued, the bluing on the rifle looks okay, but the magazine has blemishes where the bluing "didn't take". The decision of bluing was an after thought. I had originally intended to get all the stock work and scope work out of the way and wanted to hand polish the entire rifle before having it blued.

Thanks, the stock maker stays in Karimnagar, Andhra Pradesh and he offered to blue it along with the stock work and on a whim I said "yes", thinking it would be one less thing on my mind. I guess I could still have it re-blued later if I want. The finish has not yet been done, I am waiting to do the glass and pillar bedding before I get to it.

The way your project is turning out is very nice! The SMLE action, trimmed like yours, makes for a very attractive and pleasing profile. Please let us know how it it shoots, bedded into a one piece stock. I'm curious about this. Congratulations on a very nice looking rifle!

ALL .315 rifles made by IOF have a STEEL bolt

When a fellow talks of an 'alloy bolt' he is referring to the myth that the current breed of .315 rifles come with an aluminium alloy bolt.

I also am intrigued by this rifle - I don`t think I`ve ever seen a No.4 sporter with the stock ring removed. It`s a smart looking rifle ..... the fore-end is a little heavier, straighter and deeper than I`d like but that`s a minor - and personal - issue.
That stock REALLY needs oiling. Unusual for teak but it looks very dry. Don`t use any form of mineral oil by the way.....or corn oil.
Let us know how well the rifle shoots after you`ve bedded the action and free-floated the barrel.

Grumpy, the stock still needs finishing, as for the shape I think it looks kinda "chunky" too, but it fits me well and balances well. Personally, I prefer the looks of the old safari rifles with thinner stocks, but I guess I am shaped so that they don't fit me well! Also I don't think it's a No IV, despite the positioning of the safety and the grooved cocking piece! if you look at the shape of the receiver it looks like an unaltered No 1 Mk III.

Yes, I realised that after having a closer look after posting but the same comments apply - I haven`t seen a sporterised No. 1 Mk III* with the stock ring removed either.

Hi ss in earlier models of 315 rifle bolts were machined out of steel wnd case hardend them to give more strenth.Later bolt wer machined out of ALLOY of steel,vandium cromium etc for higher strenth and eliminate the lenthy process of case hardning
