Skyman, Defender is the one which the SAS used to use (they shifted to Pinzgauers now). Range Rovers are a different ball game, super-luxury SUVs. LRs are the typical "African Safari" vehicle. The Defender doesn't even have AC as standard!!!!

SS, I'll also be commuting through Mumbai traffic, so probably your first group is better!

The river crossing pic is of my scorpio. It does basic off roading even without the 4x4. If similar things are your interest don't even bother with a 4x4. You would be well served with a scorpio or safari, or if budget is a constraint a Bolero. These are tried and tested vehicles and have been improved for over a decade now. I can personally vouch for the scorpio having owned it for 5 years and driven it for 1 lac km..still going!

What you see in pic 3 is closer to genuine off roading. The actual gets much worse. If these is what you intend to do in your vehicle along with commuting in mumbai traffic a gurkha or bolero would be a decent bet, the former requiring much more maintenance. I have some personal experience with a bolero - only heard first hand from gurkha owners.

If through and through off roading is what needs to be done neither of the gleaming +10lac suvs are recommended. Get a CJ3b and build it up..you will cherish it for a lifetime!

The usage would typically be 90% normal commute, maybe 9.9% highway, and 0.1% "rough" roads. No real offroading. Basically a macho-looking big vehicle. As I said, Tata Winger or Innova look too tame!!

I like the Safari looks, but have heard too many negatives about it. Any feedback would be welcome!

In that case I wouldn't recommend a 4x4 but sometimes one does what the heart says.

Safari- can't comment on it at all as all i would say is what I have heard. No personal experience with it. Safarigent owns one and should be able to give you some advice.
