lala deen dayal the photographer was a pioneer of sorts and a trained engineer from Roorkee could have sat on his laurels in a cushy govt job

That is a good link,Timmy. I have seen this photos before as Raja Deen Dayal was a well known photographer of his era, especially known for his photographs from Hyderabad. I may even have an old book laying around at my home.

Those dresses really give an interesting insight into those times.

Another interesting aspect is the knives the British officers were wearing on their belts.

Those Kinjal knives are traditional to Caucasus.Many still wear them along with their traditional costume. Even I got one, I mean the dress

.

This is a Kinjal made by my B-I-L as a part of his apprenticeship at a polytechnic.

Amazing find, Timmy, thanks!

Love that pet Cheetah in the 2nd pic (with Grand Duke Alexander - btw, Alexander seems to have travelled the world to hunt! Was reading Buffalo Bill Cody's autobiography and he mentions Alex hunted buffalo with him!). This would be an African cheetah? AFAIK, Indian Cheetahs were extinct by then???

thanks for the link, I used to be great fan of Raja Deen Dayal's work, maybe because of the rick history he documented in his photographs, thanks for rekindling the fan in me!

The Indian Cheetahs went extinct in the 1950's.
These are most probably Indian.
Look at those black buck. What fantastic trophy bucks. All 4 of them.

Those aren't British Officers. The caption says:
Over the course of his remarkable career, Deen Dayal opened studios in Indian cities, employing over 50 photographers and assistants.
This is a picture of the Grand Duke Alexander of Russia and companions after a cheetah hunt in March 1891.
So knives from the Caucasus makes sense.

I like the cheetah wearing a mask - bandito cheetah !
Presumably it`s to keep the animal calm - like hooding raptors.
I wasn`t aware that coursing with cheetahs took place anywhere outside of Arabia.
