how can I tell from the marking on my bsa dbbl the year of its make.

Take a photo of the barrel flats and post it here. Also, what is the serial number?

The barrel flats photo is not very clear. But, those Birmingham proof marks (BV under the crown)were used between 1904-1954. Unfortunately, BSA records are not easily available so very difficult to ascertain exact date of manufacture. Probably the best thing to do would be to contact Birmingham Proof House.
