The overall length of a khukuri is measured in a straight line, from the tip of the blade to the centre of the pommel / butt cap.

The dimensions you mention are for the blade only. These dimensions may only be applicable when importing and not for something made or bought in India. However, cross-check this to be certain.

Thank you Rustom, for the link. Thought of working on something that would be 7" blade + 5" handle just to be on the safe side. But then would 8mm thick spine be wasted on a blade only 7" in length ? Hmmm. May be I can use a slightly slimmer and narrower leaf spring for that.

That is a decision you need to make for yourself - whether you want "to be on the safe side" or you want to use the 8mm blank.

This chopper, http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=20013 , is more or less identical to the dimensions you are considering. The stock thickness is .217" or 5.512mm.

Is a Bolo knife a more practical option when compared to a khukri, for brush work and chopping?
