How many types? Like the stars in the sky, like the waves in the sea, like the....... uhhh you got it, uncountable 
When I was a kid, I remember one which was shaped like a 1911 Colt, but had a Walther-like extension of the barrel (I knew it then, being a Commando Comic fan). My kid now has a few which look like the marijuana fuelled dreams of a sci-fi movie maker!
The best? The old brass "single shot muzzle loaders", which you had to fill after every shot. I had one which lasted years & years. Today's PRC stuff lasts till the end of the day, if you are lucky!
