Considering you keep getting yourself punctured, you are better off with a first-aid kit and some surgical sutures and needles carried in a bum bag.Skyman wrote:What say you?
However, if you must have a knife for life and are too scrawny to carry a Khukri, get yourself a Swiss Army Knife. Don't buy the Champ, the weight will tire you out.

Be reasonable.I can carry you if i wish it.A khukri isn't a practical choice if i hope to surprise said puncture causers is it? Swiss army knives aren't what i'm looking for.
Wrt aid kit, i asked the pretty nurse in the hospital if i could have a suture needle and thread. She politely refused. This was after i read her palm and told her she would have a good marriage
Come now Mack.Enough with the teasing. Will you spill on the esse's yet?
Thanks again Naga, but i'm looking for a fixed blade in the 3-4 in range.Any more is difficult to deploy and manage.

If that's all you want a knife for, ask elsewhere.Skyman wrote:A khukri isn't a practical choice if i hope to surprise said puncture causers is it?
Do you recall what I told you when I caught you making stabbing moves?
So you think you are tough and want a knife to " surprise said puncture causers". Continue down this path and you are going to meet a bad end.

That isn't what i want it for.I want a knife that can do all that is asked of it.It could be opening parcels, cutting a bit of wire or wood if needed, fire starting, whatever.I doubt i can buy knives intended for a specific purpose for a long time.In the meantime, i want one that can do it all.

if you find one let us know, knives are funny lot what you need as mack said a Swiss army knife.Skyman wrote:That isn't what i want it for.I want a knife that can do all that is asked of it.It could be opening parcels, cutting a bit of wire or wood if needed, fire starting, whatever.I doubt i can buy knives intended for a specific purpose for a long time.In the meantime, i want one that can do it all.
when an old hand advice one then one should listen with both ears.
no knife can do all that you ask of it.
within 3-4 inch knife one can not cut wire, not barbed wire that is. so be realistic in yor wants. as matter of fact swiss army knife is much more realistic to your requirement. lets see it has sisors for opening parcel, can be used to cut wire has a blade to cut wood, yap that fits the Swiss army knife.

I meant ordinary electrical wire. The knife must be able to chop through it.I find SAK blades are delicate and get scratched and blunted easily.

I hve read the post ,and i would not consider myself an expert worthy enough to answer but if you people have money to spare ,then, what about the" research" i done online The Gerber LMF II ASEK , SOG Seal Pup Elite ,Ontario RAT 5 ,Gerber 31-000751 Bear Grylls Survival Series Ultimate Knife, Serrated Edge,CRKT Razel SS7 ?
All different brands all classics in their own way.Though an avid Swiss Army Knife collector they are just blings compared to the work horses mentioned here!

Re: One knife for life.Which one?
Exactly.Blings.The razel is a tantoish blade.Looking for a more practical point.The elite's blade is too large.Looking for 4in and under.Ditto BG and rat 5.
In fact, i am thinking of an izula as a on-person knife and esee 3/4 for all other purposes.

Re: One knife for life.Which one?
Glad you don't have the self defence angle now. As I said earlier a heavy duty folder is all you want for the above needs. A fixed blade is okay, but you'll quickly find it is exponentially difficult to edc than a folder. I'd vote for zt 350, spyderco techno (perfect size), and maybe zt 550. I'll update to thread with photos soon... Okay here they come:Skyman wrote:That isn't what i want it for.I want a knife that can do all that is asked of it.It could be opening parcels, cutting a bit of wire or wood if needed, fire starting, whatever.I doubt i can buy knives intended for a specific purpose for a long time.In the meantime, i want one that can do it all.
L to R: Techno, ZT 0550 and 0350:
Their blade thicknesses... Heavy duty... (Techno is far right, with 550 in the middle, and 350 on the left)
Closed...

MY fine fellow, ZT's are in your domain only.I was looking at skeletonized knives because they do not protrude as a folder would.I quite like the clean lines of the Rsk Mk1 but that is wayy out of budget. The skeletonized knives cost like 40$ are are very good quality.I doubt sleek folders are available in that range?

If I could, then I'd probably go with s30v steel+bowie knife design+ heavyweight knife for the rest of the life.

Re: One knife for life.Which one?
I for one, have had 2 Knives for the past 40 years plus-- one a WW2 KA BAR which belonged to my father, and has seen extensive use, and other the one which i carry all the time is a 4-3/4 inch bladed fixed Blade with a Horn Handle- J A HELBERG Eskilstuna Sweden- which i actually purchased in 1970- in Eskilstuna Sweden from this very famous local knife maker. This particular knife is fairly compact- still with original leather scabbard and, and my constant companion, served as meat cutter- wood cutter- tin cutter etc etc and still is highly serviceable, the Carbon Steel Blade once sharpened will not dull- as long as there is no abuse. Swedes in those days had reputation for best steel in the World. 43 years of use has endeared it even more to me !!
