Is Rimfire shooting more economical than Air gun shooting.

Post by hvj1 » Wed Feb 27, 2013 5:33 pm

Dear Friends,
A very interesting debate took place regarding the above mentioned topic. While i personally hold the participants in highest regards (Mack, TC, TP, Timmy et all). I am particularly intrigued by the question myself, but I would like to know more views on the subject , particularly from IFGians abroad, who have access and have used both type of guns.
Best Regards

Considering the strong concentration of registered users on IFG is from India I think the result will be predictable.

I think members living abroad will have the same opinion as those living here.

I believe .22LR Ammo from KF is priced at around Rs 20 .
An air gun pellet of Indian made would be cheaper .

A IOF .22 rifle is priced at Rs 30,000 plus taxes .
An Indian made air rifle would be cheaper .

A IOF .22 revolver is priced at Rs 43,359.70
An Indian made air pistol would be cheaper .

Also , an Arms License is needed to possess an rimfire gun ( rifle / revolver / pistol ) . Air guns / pistols can be legally possessed without an Arms License .

We have still to receive opinions from IFGians abroad. At the moment, we have received replies on the Indian context alone.

Rimfire shooting is definitely more expensive (ammo + weapon + time span). I added the time span factor because my esteem for shooting is a long term process.
Rimfire ammo is relatively cheap in France (lucky we are :D ) but absolutely no comparison to the airgun pellets. In Germany, in general, weapons are cheaper than in France but ammo is more expensive.

my best regards

Here in the USA, 22 LR ammo can be purchased for around 4 cents a round and up (way up!), and often at 3.5 cents a round if you look for it. 22 caliber pellets can be purchased for less than 1.5 cents a round, and 177 pellets can be purchased for less than a penny apiece.

Hello All,

Having some experience in both the worlds (2 countries) Pellets are cheaper compared to Rim fire. But I usually plink at 50-100 meters so I preferred rim fire.

Keeping aside the monetary values, rim fire is lot more fun with tracers and long range targeting. A good bang for the buck.

Yeah I agree with that. Even though I grew up shooting an air rifle, I much prefer .22LR

I do have a .177 pump up pellet gun and one tin of pellets that I bought years ago. Last fall, there was a squirrel that was really messing with me. He kept trying to get in through the eaves of the house and when I would try to chase him away, he would sit on the roof and chitter at me. Well, I like squirrels (they taste like chicken) but I wasn't going to share my house with him. They are hell on the ductwork and electrical wiring if they get in. So I went upstairs and pulled the window down, backed into the bedroom so the neighbors wouldn't see me. I loaded up a pellet and centered the scope on his head and pulled the trigger. The squirrel just stood there and looked at me accompanied by the sound of tinkling glass.
Ok I totally forgot that the scope sits much higher than the barrel and now I had a hole in the top of the window and the squirrel was probably laughing his little head off. You know how much it cost to replace a double paned window with low E glass? I won't even bring up the fact that the wife was not amused at the "stupid male antics".

Don't tell me that shooting a pellet is cheaper than shooting a .22 LR :(

in India as stated by many airgun is cheaper to run then .22lr.

in the UK for example the price of airguns and .22 is not far off, in many cases airgun can be or just costly to run as .22lr.
