First attempt at making a knife

Post by sandy_3126 » Tue Feb 05, 2013 1:40 pm

Hello Ifgians,

Few months back, I was part of a team running 24 hr fatigue cycles for a wind turbine blade, at our test center, and I drew the short stick to get the grave yard shift. During this period, I was usually accompanied by a couple of techs. One of the nights we had a enormous crack in the structure hence had to shut down. The internet was down and I was extremely bored, So I was challenged to build a knife, from the scrap pile in the shop by one of the techs to brush up my shop skills.

I found some scrap carbon steel piece. Torch cut it to the size, and then came up with a ridiculous shape (maybe from prince of persia), Grinded it. Made a hilt from some more scrap and voila, this is the monstrosity... The the Handle was belt sanded to what looks like oval from a rectangular piece, drilled some space into it and with two bolts ....Rustoleum black and some clear coat, the knife's ready!!!!

Surprisingly it did pretty well at our last camping trip.

That's very commendable for a first attempt! Interesting blade geometry. But, it would be a real pain to sharpen it with a hand-held sharpening system due to that re-curve. I am guessing you sharpened it on a grinder.

BTW, a little info on the tang shape and the HT you gave to the blade would definitely be appreciated.

Blade geometry came from what I could remember the prince of persia blade would be after 5 cups of coffee at 2 am in night with a sharpie on the back of a scrap plate. Apart from that my poor cutting skills ruined an already weird sketch. HT was another story, I had already finished the shaping and polishing and was about to arc weld the hilt onto the blade, and then our technician chad asked me to treat it. I had no inclination to do it, as it would mean re-polishing the whole damn thing, but still we heated the blade with the gas torch as well as we could to mild orange in the periphery and dunked it onto shop oil (I was on fire extinguisher duty). The blade is very strong, brings down a medium sized fire wood with ease.

The tang extends to 18", the handle is over-sized to hold it with both hands like a sword. The handle does look ugly, the challenge was to build it in one night from the whatever waste we had on the shop.

I often thought of changing the handle and making a two piece, nicely carved handle for it, but whom am I kidding, This knife ha been lying in the storage shed for last six months, collecting dust.

Hi Sandy,

Handle
