Rimfire Nikon Scope- Suitable for IOF 30.06?

Post by AgentDoubleS » Sat Feb 02, 2013 3:07 pm

I had purchased a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire scope since I had originally planned to purchase an IOF .22. I also got a set of matching 11mm doevatailed see through high rings from BSA.- again keeping in mind the IOF .22.

(link updated after Vikram's post)

Midway through, the plans changed and I bought an IOF 30.06 instead. I have 2 questions:

1. Is a scope meant for a smaller caliber .22 suitable for the 30.06- will the increased stress due to the recoil cause damage to the scope?
2. For putting up the peep sight is it advisable to do it on the 11mm dovetail or the drilled holes which would be used for the scope?I do understand the 11mm dovetail rings are not suitable for mounting the scope- is the same advice valid for peep sights?

Regards,
SS

SS,

It may not be robust enough to survive on the IOF 30-06 you intend to mount it on. Centerfire scopes have their parallax set at 100 yards while rimfire scopes have it set at 50 yards.Have no idea if that makes any difference but thought I should mention it.

Thanks WTP.

Will wait to see feedback of members who've mounted the peep sights on the dovetail.

Hello SS,

I. There is not much of difference between scopes of same price range (unless one is a premium brand like Nikon etc mid-range ones). Your present scope can be used with 30-06. It does not cause any damage to your scope. And I am not sure about rings.

I am right now using a scope of a 30 caliber with my IOF .22 rifle. I currently have an a 1" High Ring with Weaver in my inventory. Please contact me for more details.

2. Not much info about peep sights.

Thanks Stampmaster, I intend to mount the scope with Warne bases and rings. I will use the rifle for big bore competitions so mounting the sights effectively is key.

SS,

Are you sure the scope you bought is a rimfire scope? Because, the link you posted does not mention that fact and one of the reviewers says that he mounted it on his .270.

There is another link which takes to a rimfire scope.

However, if the scope is indeed a rimfire scope, it will not withstand the recoil of the .30-06 and will lose zero pretty quickly. You would not want that. You will be better served by getting a dedicated scope for your .30-06.JMHO.

Hi Vikram,

The link you mentioned is correct. It is the Nikon Prostaff Rimfire. I do quite like the scope and considering their availability (or lack of it) in India I do not want to take a chance. Thanks for your inputs.

Thanks,
SS
