Yes I guess I was 15-16 or thereabouts, at the time I got this blade made. :D
We must meet Moin, I was quiet intimidating to look at even then :D , the sorrow today is all the muscle from my arms has moved to belly  :|

The only other options were the Rambo knife "look alike" being sold in Chor Bazaar apart from the usual Rampuri etc.

There was no Machette and after seeing it in a Movie I was hell bent on having one. It was holiday season and with a few hundred rupees to spare it was quiet a project. It was a prized possession for many years.

I should have this somewhere, will post photo's when im back next in India.

It was really an interesting project. :D
Wonderful :) Even I have fond memories of pestering my mum to buy those "Rambo" knives, these were at those times sold around manish market and in Heera Panna. The one's in Heera Panna were for a few thousand which at those times were a princely sum :)... Looking forward to the pic and ofcourse give me a buzz when you are in Mumbai.

Regards
Moin.

Hi Pankaj,

As I have nothing to do at this time and twiddle my thumbs, till my PO arrives :D

Im going to share one more experience on knife making with you, as has been recommended in this thread, Tool Steel files, are excellent blanks to begin with, and unfortunately at the time of undertaking this project, there were no wonderful forums like IFG to guide like minded souls, just a few kind spirits, you met on the range who shared your passion, which was looked down upon as being a senseless waste of time at best and Criminal at worst :D

So off I went again to Lohar Chawl got me some blanks, came home and made a drawing/sketch of the Bowie knife I wanted to make (was in love with the bowie)

The technique was quiet simple, I stuck the cardboard "farma" to the blank, and drilled holes, to take out the excess metal, post this I used a hex saw, which kept breaking, i realized much later the relation between steel strength, and cutting capacity. :D so anyway after a lot of push and shove, finally got the excess metal off, and used another file to get basic semblance of the design.

Ok, so now we have an File, which looks like somewhat like a knife, but how the heck do you put an edge to it! Back to Chor Bazaar, found a "Ghanti" (large sharpening disc) after much negotiation and reluctance he decided to undertake the job, after a lot of effort, we did have a knife :D , I was pleased as hell!! Again to Kumbhar wada, got myself a hilt blank (It was a full tang knife) which I got home and worked with my small little tool kit to make my project a success :) (I have this knife will post pictures)

The 2nd attempt, when I went to try using a different technique was a complete disaster! I took the blank after marking the design, using a Red Permanent Marker (I still remember that) to a local garage. I got the guy who repairs, 'Spring & Patta" suspension on my trust fiat to use his electric welding machine to cut the excess metal. Just my luck, he wasnt around, so the gent, who does "Patra" work and used and Oxy-Acetelene torch, was around, and volunteered to cut it for me, it hurts me to proceed further but the Blank was completely destroyed. He just could not get it right and I had no clue at the time, how to do it right.

However seeing my despair, my Spring Patta mechanic who was back by then introduced me to the "Patta" and he told me how he used to use Truck Leaf 'Spring' to make swords back in his native village :D Its the first time I learnt about high carbon steel and the excellent blades you can make, from them.

I was never fortunate enough to have my own forge, but was lucky enough to work on several blades, big and small at several locations across Mumbai...I have fond memories of making some excellent blades and also learning from my mistakes :D , I just wish IFG was around then to guide me!

Anyway back to work :D and sorry for going OT!

Wish you all the Success in your project

Regards,

Dr.Saab; Sorry, must have missed your query. Can you please specify what it was, will try my best to answer or get you the answer.

well moin,
my question is...apart from spring plates and files is there any other source of quality steel we can buy in the market for forging?like for eq..you get lead, aluminium etc as cubes.thanks

Apocalypse now is the movie, one of the greatest ever made.

I heard apart from kamani pattas(leaf springs) old discarded files are good too! but i canr vouch for that ,i have kamani patta cleaver and a small knife made of old file cant seem to find inferior one among both of them ?they are both good ,and as i always say they servr their purpose well both costing well under 3 dollars !thats a steal in quality steel!

Gentlemen, your experiences have inspired me to try, after many years, to make a knife out of hacksaw blades. The first attempt is coming on fine. I am starting small, with half of a hacksaw blade. Once can't use the full blade, anyway, as it is extremely bendy.

The challenge? No power tools. Only elbow grease!

First, broke the blade in half (the easy part). Then, on the old carborundum stone, grind, grind, grind, grind. Got the shape and basic edge taper. Then the corners of the carborundum to grind away the sawteeth on the handle part. Retaining the sawteeth on the back of the blade. This took whole of last Sunday, excepting mealtimes.

Subsequent edge refinement on the Spyderco Triangle. Still going on (I am giving about an hour a day). I somehow lose the angle when sharpening on the curved part of the blade, so the curved part remains less sharp than the straight, and I have to sharpen more).

Intend to sand away the black paint (it's got branding on it). Then use Ballistol cold bluing solution to blue the knife. Wrap paracord or leather for the handle + lanyard. This will be a small (3.5" blade) fixed knife to rest in my pocket, once I make a sheath.

Next, a powersaw blade. But, using power tools. One Sunday of manual grinding was one too many!

By the way, can someone guide me to a source of good paracord (the 7 strand, 500 - 550 lb type) in Mumbai? On ebay and oliveplanet, it's like 6-7 INR / foot (600-700 for 100 ft). You do get cheaper on ebay, but those are 500 or 1000 ft lengths, where in a Mumbai flat do I keep that?
Cheers!

EssDee

It wasn't our good friend Indiana Jones, that movie made me go to Colaba Market an buy a Whip :D

As in all movies, the hero's never hurt themselves with their own weapons, how I wish this was true in life :( , after a few whacks on my back and cheeks, better sense prevailed and put it away :D

Sorry Pistolero, I missed your post. The movie is Francis Ford Cappola's Apocalypse Now starring Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, Harrison Ford, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Lawrence Fishburne, Scott Glen....(oh what a cast !!).. The story line is influenced by Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness.
Its a cult film based on Vietnam War because it delves into the dark side of war in the jungles of Cambodia. I humbly request you to watch it once again. Probably you will die to make that machete again ROTFL

So you hunted for a whip toooooo .... OH my god... it seems great brains make the same mistakes ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL..
Now try an imagine how many times I was hit on the back of my little head and all over my body by a wooden nunchuck when I was went crazy after watching Enter The Dragon as a kid. But I didn't give up on Bruce Lee.

TCda..... fortunately for me, my Mom didn't let my Dad buy me a nunchuck..... so I made one with rolled up newspaper and pyjama cord. My experimentation with this stopped after I broke my own glasses and got a superlative hiding! ROTFL
Cheers!

Dear Essdee you were fortunate as a kid. I would never listen to my mom and my dad would always pamper my interest in books and weapons because I never asked for toys, chocolates, clothes etc like other kids. First he gave me 15 bucks to buy my first wooden nunchuck. After I learned all the tricks and wanted something more substantial he helped me make one with high grade stainless steel pipes, iron chains and copper rivettes. He even took the finished product to a machine shop and got serrations made on the pipes for better grip. ROTFL
This was not the end. After 36 Chambers of Shaolin was released I made a tri chuck using the same materials. I guess both are lying somewhere in my house.
It was dad who encouraged me to make knives out of hacksaw blades and strips of steel

Cheers

Dear TC,

Get hold of the movie, its been a long long long time, but I think the Man Mountain uses it.

Could be wrong its been a long time, but ya this movie was the inspiration.

Great to know the older stories, really it helps to know that you are not alone, and that there are other inhabitants on planet "weapons experiment"

TC,

On 36 Chamber of Shaolin, if you remember the weapon used by "San Te" in the fight Before he used the Tri-Nun-Chuk.

The long spear like weapon, with a Crescent Blade on one side and the big wide blade on the other! Does anyone know what that is called??

Hi Pistolero,
Its some kind of a Qiang, a spear in Chinese but its more of a halbard. I do distinctly remember the spear Lu Chia Hui used and here is your link (directly from Shaolin !) on how to use a Chinese long spear with video instructions and graphics

http://www.shaolin.com.au/re.htm

and watch this video to refresh your memories and techniques... I just did  The guy has that big spear behind him, rested against the wall

And here is the video on how to use the three stick nunchuck also called the dragon stick as I found in the following video, part one of a 1979 film...

Enjoy and go back in time friend
