My vote is for Asiatic.

Based on the foliage in the background, the lion was probably shot in India.

As for the sartorial elegance, he was most probably shooting rather than hunting.

Looks like an Asiatic lion.
In general the Asiatic lion has a smaller mane when compared to the African Lion.
But this is not always true. The Tsavo maneating lions (though male) did not sport a mane.

On the mane, size, etc. my vote is Asiatic. The Tsavo lions belonged to a local variant, where the males are also maneless.

This is how they used to "hunt" in those days. And obviously, being a Maharajah, he had professional hunters, beaters, etc. etc., and he could be busy making the perfect four-in-hand on that tie, till the time his bearer pointed out the lion, and handed him the gun! Or maybe the shot was taken by someone else and he only posed?

Anyway, one expects a Maharajah to know that when sitting, even on a dead lion, a suit jacket is supposed to be unbuttoned - or didn't they have this rule in the 30s?

Another thing - going by the relative sizes, the lion would have died even if this Maharajah would have sat on him!!! Yes, Haji, poor lion!

But I liked the article: India, the land of tigers, elephant gods, snake charmers, rope trick......
Cheers!

You guys talking about the lion having been quashed many not know a lot about Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. He weighed closer to 200 KG at his peak. By that measure, he is very trim in this photo! His appetites, carnivorous and carnal , were said to be phenomenal.

Yes.. Sir Bhupinder Singh used to finish a full tandoori chicken with his cup of coffee as the after- noon snacks.

A representative specimen for Indian Lion.
