comparison between old and new iof revolver.

Today one of my friend was discussing about buying revolver in his new licence,his budget permits only iof revolver ,he was confused between old iof revolver design with firing pin on hammer or revolver with firing pin on body with flat hammer. Which design is more ruged and better .Feedback is requested.

A frame mounted firing pin is less likely to break, and is more rugged. In case of a pierced primer, though, the pin may not retract and bind up the cylinder, but that is exceedingly rare.

The hammer mounted firing pin is more likely to break, but if you are not dry firing the weapon (which will cause it to break if you are snapping it without using snap caps), you should not have trouble.

The big difference is in the lock work. Te old IOF used the same lock work as Webley, a derivative of the Schmidt-Galand action. The new lock work is based on the Smith & Wesson lock work, although I cannot say I have actually seen a picture of it or know anything about it or its reliability. I would guess that it is cheaper to manufacture and it should work ok if it is made correctly.

The frame mounted firing pin in the IOF revolver rust a lot. To overcome this regular cleaning and lubricating is needed.
Except the rust, I haven't experienced any problem with the frame mounted firing pin since I have owned the revolver (past four years)

I think this is new technology and your friend should go with the frame mounted firing pin revolver.
Also this way he will have cheaper and newer revolver.
